Long story short....

In one of our bathrooms the exhaust fan is vented into the attic.  Which is to code in this township  (??!?!?!)

Anyway we want it vented to the roof.

I want the exhaust fan replaced, extend the vent to outside through the roof.

Obviously we want it done correctly as we do no want a roof leak.

Does this project come under a roofer or multiple people?

I would hire a contractor who does this sort of work.   You also may want to consider venting out the soffets rather than the roof.  Most high end homes have soffet vents which makes a lot more sense than cutting a hole in your roof.

That could be any number of skill combinations - I might start by calling a roofer to get an opinion, or a home remodeler.

The problem I have had is finding someone who will handle what is probably a relatively "small" job but that could be more complicated than it seems.

Ask around of your neighbors/work associates/friends (well I guess you are doing that here!) and see if anyone you know could do it or know about it's feasibility.  Somebody needs to get in that attic and take a look.

Maybe one of the other trades people you may use (HVAC, plumbing, landscaping, etc) do work on the side and could handle it.  Some of those people have other skills.

I use the HomeAdvisor dot com website for all of my home projects.  No job is too big or too small...they do it all! Most of the help is local-based. I prefer it that way. I'm done using national companies who hire the locals anyway.

@Abrowneyegirl   Why not contact your township's building inspector to see who is licensed and capable of doing this type of job correctly.

Or if you still have an old fashioned traditional neighborhood hardware store or lumber yard in your area the owners often can recommend reliable tradespeople.

Try finding a contractor on nextdoor.com, your local neighborhood community board.  HomeAdvisor has never worked for me, as I hear most of them pay to be on that site, like Angie's List.  I ask a lot of questions on nextdoor and somebody always has a great answer.  Good luck.

@Abrowneyegirl - the electrician did ours.  Purchased, installed, ran the flexible silver vent duct across the attic, and vented it through the soffit.  So, just one company for us.

In my area of WV, I would ask my neighbor who has a general contractors license to do this for me.

@aroc3435.  Usually, city employees are not permitted to make recommendations regarding contractors due to liability issues.  When my entire house needed replumbing, the girls in the water department office recommended a certain plumber.  I hired him and he did a crapo job; must have been someone's relative.

@Hoovermom

I also suggest u NOT hire anyone thru Home Advisor or Angie's List. They have no clue about who they're sending. A few months ago, a friend of mine contacted Home Advisor to put in new landscaping. My friend is 79 yrs old and clueless - so the guy who came over asked for all the money upfront - and, of course, he never showed up to do any work.

I'm on nextdoor dot com every day - and I've gotten great referrals - and I have given great referrals. I think that's the best site to use. Second, is Yelp!!! When ur dealing with any type of construction - u have to be very careful as there are many SCAMMERS out there!!! The person also has to be licensed - and u need to check out the license with the contractors state license board - and google their name on-line.
