Re: Great website for New Year organization and decluttering

I like the idea of the website, thank you for taking your time to let us know. My issues are things like monogramed glasses, silver set that won't polish nice. I'm the last one of the family left. Do I yard sale that stuff or pitch it? {#emotions_dlg.ohmy} A true cedar chest full of fashion jewelry (unfortunately) the funeral home really put major gashes in it............way too late to do anything about that. These are the kinds of things I just don't know, so it sits here. I don't want to leave it all for dh as I have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. {#emotions_dlg.scared} I live in an extremely rural town and don't have any connections. Thanks for listening and any ideas would be swell.

I tend to get very sentimental about things passed down through the family. They are very hard to let go of, even a few things that aren't really super special to me. I have just one child, and I know he is not going to want everything that I have that has been passed down, for what will be to him, the fifth generation. Some things are non negotiable, and if he needs to dispose of them after my death, so be it (like the 1800's family Bible with all the births and deaths entered), and others I have been remaking (my great aunt's wedding dress and 'going away outfits' into doll clothing for a couple of her dolls from the 1920's). Still others he has been very outspoken about and I know he wants them.

My solution is to let go of things that I have accumulated in my lifetime, new stuff that really has no meaning or history, in favor of something of sentimental value. For instance, my cousin gave me a nice, expensive waterless pan that was my great grandmother's (how she ever had such an expensive pan is beyond me) so I'll gladly move out a cheap newer pan to keep that one.

I have also given, as gifts to some family members, family heirlooms for graduations or the birth of a new baby. This spreads them out a little and keeps them in the family, but not always under foot at my house.

Can you explain to me how a website can help you to declutter your home ? I just don't understand how that works. decluttering is simply a matter of getting in there and doing it. How can a website tell you that something is useful so you keep it or is no longer useful so you discard it. It is all as simple as that. Not rocket science.

Well, I may not explain this very well, and while I understand not procrastinating (which I think is what you are referring to) .... I am sick of redoing my closet every two months and going to this website gives me some new ideas.... things I might not have seen or heard of.....maybe even new inventions. Anything to make my life a bit easier now. I don't have time to run around a lot due to health issues of, not only myself, but elderly parents as well. Places like this can save me a lot of time and energy and just makes life so much less complicated for those of us who don't have the time to pound the ground looking for these items or can't set at a computer for hours looking. That is why I appreciate this op's post. I saw some very interesting things. Whatever I am doing now is not working soooo

If it provides MOTIVATION, then it's very valuable ....... Not rocket science. {#emotions_dlg.unsure}
