My neighbor got new granite countertops today and I am jealous. I talked to the guys that were installing it and had them come over to measure. They are getting me a quote but I know what they charged them and we have the exact same size kitchen. I thought it would cost more.
I'm not even sure I want granite or something else. I only need 9 feet with a sink in the middle. They mentioned a drop sink, I always wanted a farm sink but that would cost too much. I have the original counters from 1950.
I know different materials have been discussed before but would like opinions.

I'm not a fan of granite countertops. Everyone seems to have them, and they're not my style or anything special, IMO. I don't like such a heavy look in a kitchen. I prefer something more sleek and less cluttered-looking.
Obviously, it's a personal decision, though. And many people love granite countertops, so they're certainly popular!

Ceramic tile is making a comeback.

I'm not sure what I want but I don't want it to look cheap or fake. I think tile might get dirty with the grout. I don't need much but deciding on a color might be tough. I will probably stay here forever.
I don't want to be like the neighbors who only did it because they are moving this year. I want to enjoy it if I am going to be spending some bucks. I don't know what a good price would be but it sounded much lower than I expected which was why I never considered it before.

You can get it in over about 2,000 patterns, so I'm sure you could find something you adore. You can even get plain white if you have the opinion of the above poster. I have granite and absolutely adore it, and after having various types over the years, I will always stay with this now for looks, cost, care, and function. You need so little it should be your choice. You can afford a really great look for a great price if you don't need more than that. Take your time, don't rush when looking at types and patterns. Go to the wholesaler's stockyard and look at real samples. Find something you love and can live with for a long time. Enjoy !!!!

You may want to look at Caesar (sp?) stone in lieu of granite.

I hope your nay-bors like it but it's not for me.

When we remodeled our kitchen we went with quartz counter. Absolutely love them and they are less expensive.

I say "yea." Yes, you read all the articles "Granite is dead!" but then you see the alternatives and they are either pricey or strange. Like concrete. Granite is durable. The quartz is a bit nicer but a lot more expensive and it can fracture.
I got granite, Ubatuba, put in last year at a reasonable price. There was a surplus of it (it's the dark greenish black, looks black most of the time.) And I added one of those deep sinks and tall pull down faucets to replace cheap builders sink and bad formica. Best thing I ever did.
