Every year DH has to patch in and restain the holes left by these critters. I am talking not one or two, but several. Years ago we asked a bug exterminator and he said it is not true about bugs being in the siding. Our siding is cedar.
Please don't say, Google it. We have, but thought if someone has tried something and it worked, it would save us the time and effort.
TIA

I love hearing the woodpeckers, but they are doing their thing on trees here, not my house.

Several years ago my parents had a determined pileated woodpecker drumming on the side of their A-Frame home, they tried nearly everything to get it to move on. Finally my dad hung 'jingle bells' on a cord of mylar reflective ribbon across that entire section of the wall. Eventually the bird moved on. . .

log cabin here
woodpecker buffet
what is currently working........
disposable pie tins attached to a string attached to house at their favorite area.
the tins are reflective, move in the breeze.
located deep in the woods so the beverly hillbilly visual is only seen by the bears and delivery drivers.

A lot of times, they're pecking to attract a mate. We had one pecking on our treated lumber shed, and that is why. He eventually moved on. I know you said to not recommend googling it...as you wanted to hear real-life recommendations...but when we were dealing with this woodpecker, there were a gazillion techniques talked about online.

It's been a problem in my neighborhood too. We had a big hole that we had to get someone to fill in then paint over. It was way up in the trim over the garage.
Sorry I don't have any suggestions though and hope to hear something from someone else.

We live in a cedar sided house in the trees and when we moved in there was lots of damage/holes from woodpeckers in our siding. We were also often woken up early in the morning from their pecking because their favorite spot was right outside our bedroom window. ugh!
So we hung reflective tapes stung up all along their favorite place, along with chasing them away by throwing small rocks around them....not at them. Luckily, it worked and we've been woodpecker free for 2 years.

How about wind chimes? Fake/rubber snakes and/or owls might deter them.
We had a woodpecker actually remove a tree stump from our front yard - it was pretty amazing - glad he did it for us lol

We had 2 different kinds of woodpeckers out here. One day one had a bird trapped in the hole. Long story short I threw a small rock beside the woodpecker in the leaves in tree. The woodpecker took off & the bird got out. Have only seen the woodpecker once since? Maybe try throwing a small rock close by.

Some years ago, our pest control company told us to hang blank CD discs from the roof overhang. We used fishing line and hung several across the affected area. It worked. They do not like the flash of light when the sun strikes rhe disc.
