On second look at the after, that space doesn't really seem useful for much of anything, so in that case I guess it makes sense.  

 

It would be a nice place to read or relax and talk to the cook or have morning coffee.  And when we have guests we can never smoke people out of the kitchen, so I could corral them there.

I like the original colors of the structure, the contrasting dark and light. But I'd dump all the old furniture and window treatments, keep the walls and trim and floor, and create something with new furniture and window treatments.

 

The new is too white and too modern for me.
