Where's Chickenbutt when you need her ! ............ Go over to 'Among Friends' and look around page 3 or so for my topic called 'Exterminators' .... and read the two posts from Chickenbutt about the baggie, water & penny ... tells you how to get rid of flies at your entranceways.

I know this sounds crazy, but it works. Take a small plastic bag, add some shiny pennies & about 3" of water. I tape the bags on the house next to the kitchen door. The flies do not come in or near the bags! There is a restaurant that does the same thing to keep flies out. The horse farm across the street puts bags like that around the stable doors to keep flies out. Try it....it's cheap & you can use the same pennies every summer. Just noticed that someone else had posted this same remedy.....

I have heard that keeping geranium plants by your doorways, stop flies from coming in. Our master gardener on TV said that he tried it and it works.

Seriously - quart-size ziplock baggie. Half-fill with water. Put a penny in. Zip it up and somehow attach it to the area where you don't want flies. It works like a charm. Some of mine (I have several entrances to my house) are taped up, using 2" packing tape. One I have that I just cut a horizontal slit in the upper part (I use the freezer ones, so they are heavier duty) and hung it on a wide hook.

I've been using these now for 3 or 4 years. Fortunately, we only have flies seasonally. UGH, I hate flies sooooooo much!! Cannot stand to even have one fly get in my house. So far this year I haven't had one. Last year none also. The year before I had 2 flies in my house and that was only because the carpet installers left my front door open for 2 hours.

It might not look so great, but I'd rather not have flies around than worry about how the baggie looks. It's also a conversation-starter. Smiley Happy

Yes a well-known Texan cafe does the same thing. I was there a few days ago and not one fly in the restaurant.

Also, my friend in a rural area use moth crystals around the edges of her home and patio. They actually work at repelling rattle snakes and other critters. I learned this last week that you can spray a garlic spray on your lawn and it keeps mesquitos away. Those Texans know things I don't.

Ha! I didn't come up with this - but maybe a designer baggie? hehe

I actually read this somewhere a few years ago and I thought 'yeah, right - that sounds ridiculous'. But as much as I cannot bear to have flies come in my house I figured it was worth a try. I was shocked and amazed at how truly amazingly this works!

Every now and then somebody will ask me what's up with the baggies and I tell them the story. One time I had some furniture delivered by a couple of men from Mexico. One mentioned something about and I began to tell him what it's for when he said that they have always done that down in Mexico because it works so well.

If you are having an outdoor event and want to keep the flies out just put some of them around the perimeter of the area you are using. If you're like me and just don't want them around your entrances, just put one at each entrance. Just watch for the tape to give out every year or so. The heat of summer will cause that but if you keep an eye on it and replace the tape once a year or so it's all good.

Well, the trick with the plastic bag, water, and penny is worth a try, but I will have to keep it out of reach of my dog!
