Elements You Didn't Like About A House

I saw popcorn ceilings somewhere and said never.

My other nightmare was shag carpet in a house we printed the second year we were married.

The house I live in now had shag carpet original to the 1973 build, when we bought this in 1994. I couldn't get that ripped out fast enough!

Any type of carpeting, or drapes. Cheap light fixtures.

I don't remember how old I was, but it was my chore to rake the shag carpeting.  My childhood home had popcorn ceiling with bits of glitter in it.  I thought it was cool 😎

Re: Elements You Didn't Like About A House

I see possiblities in any home as long as it's a desireable area.

I'd rather for us to have the remodel done--than someone else do it before putting it on the market.   (Unless is was a brand new home.)

Can't stand the thought of an underground or below level basement/cellar.  Just creeps me out.

Not a fan of a home that has a garage door in the front.  That would be a deal breaker for me-even if it was brand new.

An old home with asbestos siding---no.

Re: Elements You Didn't Like About A House

I like a range of architectural styles, but the elements that I perceive to be trendy, rather than classic, would be the ones I'd reject if looking at houses right now.

One example would be "barn doors".   I love original, old pocket doors, but barn doors hung from a rod do strike me as something that is a passing thing.

Lots of wallpaper eliminates a house from consideration.  It's a drag to remove.  I can actually like some applications of wallpaper, but it is such a specific taste-- would want to choose my own, if any. I only like it sparingly used, at any rate.

Nix to popcorn ceilings as well.  Oh, and I can't stand those "master suites" that are open to the bathroom, or have a tub in the middle of the bedroom.  That's more work to try to put up doors or walls, so that would be an automatic "no".

Re: Elements You Didn't Like About A House

I would only look at homes with at least a two car garage. It would have to be detached and not be too close to the next door neighbor.  A dry basement is needed too along with many large closets and storage. Central air is a must.

No bi-level or split level homes... only ranch or two story.

I have always changed the flooring and paint colors and even the kitchen cabinets to suit me, so cosmetic things wouldn't stop me from buying.  I am not crazy about open concept...but have seen a few plans that I could live with.

We have an unuseable shelf up high (about a ft. from ceiling) that goes the full length of the main wall in our master bath. .... Go figure!

Re: Elements You Didn't Like About A House

No master bedrooms above garages- too hard to control the temp.

No to prominent garage doors.  I hate when the first thing about a house you notice is the garage.

House must be of neutral or above grade placement.

Nothing near water- I hate damp, musty smells in a house.  Sorry

Narrow cramped stairways or hallways- ugh no.

Almost anything else you can fix.
