I was waiting to read all the responses and see if anyone suggested using white vinegar for water softener. It is great for using in your plant water in small amounts. If you want to adjust the pH of your water, by making it more neutral, find out from your local water company if you don't know how to find out your water pH and then ask what you can do to your plant watering device to make the water more neutral as your plants will respond better to it.

@Mz iMac IMO, any chemical that is applied to the skin can cause cancer.
The skin is the largest organ in the human body.
I doubt any doctor is going to ask you what detergent you use unless you have a skin rash.
Cancer has many causes, Many chemicals and even the sun can cause cancer.
I wouldn't wash my panties or washcloths/towels in Tide, that's for sure.
A lot of food in the US is cancer causing because of additives. Why this allowed, I can't answer.
I would like to see these products with toxic chemicals removed and banned. Other counties pulled this junk from their shelves. We should too.
Many products made in the US are manufactured differently for other countries to remove the toxic chemicals. I don't know if Tide does this or not.
I just prefer not to use it anymore. My family members seem to have a lot of cancer...skin, lung, breast, pancreas, kidney and prostrate.
I am trying to cut my chances down of getting it too.

I've been using Nellie's for more than ten years. It does a great job and I don't use fabric softener.

My wife is allergic to regular laundry detergent so I use all free and clear so one time I bought tide free and gentle and she broke out with red welts from head to foot way worse than the did with regular laundry detergent. So we were like what is in it that made her have such an bad reaction. I rewashed her clothes in all free and clear and I haven't bought any kind except all free and clear. I have started using washing soda with all and it freshens clothes really well.I told a friend about it and I gave her a box of washing soda and a few of her family members use it to. They all love the results. And its no have anything bad in it. Ria didn't break out or get itchy from it. Good luck with laundry everyone.

I gave up store brand laundry detergent years ago. I use Dirty Labs (sold at Amazon, Whole Foods, or their own online site), or Happy Place on HSN. Both the liquid and powder of the Happy Place work great. With both brands a little goes a long way. No fabric softener.

I use Persil because it works well for me.

I use ALL free and clear, have for probably 60 yrs. My Mom used it too, but I think they have improved it over the years.
I do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets. Don't like the smell. Most of my laundry goes outside on the line.
