Great ideas ladies! I also got some small LED string lights that were offered in warm white and bright white at Christmas Tree Shops.
The warm are more like incandescent lighting while the bright are that glaring, bright LED light. Sometimes I want something that bright but sometimes, such as HH's situation, I want something soft. They are battery-operated and I think they have timers on them. You might want to check them out if the other ideas don't work for you (anybody, not just HH!!)

You could attach a false backing to the shelves and cut a hole for the cords....tv cabinets & entertainment centers usually have an opening like that. Matte board from a craft store or something of that weight might do. And you could get a color, like navy blue to emulate the night sky...Since the backing is temporary, you could use thumb tacks or those sticky peel-off pads. Place the pieces as close to the cord opening as possible and the cords would be unnoticeable.
Have fun decorating with your treasures.
