That's what I would do, too. You could use a dark color or Christmas print.
You could also try Command Adhesive cord minder hooks. I swear by Command Adhesive strips. I had a Command hook in my last apartment that hung by my front door for 10 years and when I moved it, it removed easily and left no mark behind. No Goo Gone needed. Love them.
They make specialty items for cords, which I've also used. You can see them here. I usually buy mine at Target or Lowe's. Each item has a "Where to Buy" link on its page so that you can see which stores offer that option in your area - just enter your zip code.

These are pictures of them for sale on their website.
Oh I have a dollar tree nearby - that sounds exactly like what I want. The ones I bought at QVC had 30 lights - way too many - 10 may be perfect.

Check out dollhouse supply companies.

Why don't you display them in a different area where the cords will not be an issue?
Use the sparkly white fabric used for villages to set them on and it will hide cords.

What about fabric cord covers. I have one spot in my home where it is necessary to use a cover like this:

How about a night light? They are small with low light.

Well, you can find ANYTHING on Amazon. I found some flameless taper candles with timers that arew 4.5 " tall and 1/2 " wide. Perfect for my needs. I'll probably have to hold them upright with a dab of silicone on the bottom but that's ok.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions.
BTW - anyone looking for any taper candles should absolutely look on Amazon - they have zillions of them.

I find myself going to Amazon first most of the time. You can't beat their delivery time and ease of using their website.
