I have a house near the beach and an apartment in the city. Both are light and airy, with big windows, lots of sunlight, and pretty much a beach theme mixed in with lots of crystal and glass pieces as well as china in a white/lightly floral pattern. Because that's what I like.
I couldn't care less that my city apartment is nowhere near a beach. This is how I'm comfortable and this is what makes me happy. I've never felt that I had to decorate in a particular way based on where I lived, and I don't think anyone should feel obligated to do that.

I live in Texas ... and no, I do not have pictures of cattle, metal stars, or spurs hanging around - haha! 🤠
I think people would be happiest decorating with what they like. I do anyhow ... without being based on a single theme, as in where you happen to live.
I once went thru this New England early early American phase - the inside of my house was totally cool - but talk about a theme that had nothing to do with where I live! The house looked like it was in the North East somewhere back in the late 1700's!
I really have no idea what the norm is anyhow - here or anywhere else these days...

The only spur I have hanging around is the NBA Spurs magnet on my fridge---LOL! GO SPURS GO!

I believe it has to do with our expectations and assumptions. If I'm in New England and walk into a Cape Cod style house on the beach... I kinda expect a beachy/Nantucket look. To walk in and find it be filled with SW art and furniture... hmmm. Or when I visit an auntie in Montana who owns a very contemporary home and it's filled with HEAVY Victorian furniture and drapes and.....yeah.
In the end, the person who lives there will express their style no matter what. I'm not changing my furniture because I bought a house in Tuscan in the desert. Nope, Colonial meets Shabby Chic is what you're going to see, lol. Since I'm not going to change my decorating style no matter where I live, I don't expect anyone else to either.
Does that make sense?

There was an episode of Fixer Upper where Joanna was decorating a mid century modern house -the owners wanted retro 50's style but , to be honest , it was a miss as far as that went. She is a one style decorater - that house was kinda a farmhouse from the 50's look.
