Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

Tossed 4 items from the undergarments drawer. That's about it this week.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

I like to purge by category and in January I chose for some reason to go through JEWELRY.  During the year I had purged items of jewelry but wanted to really go through everything this month.

I'm not sure how much I cleared out this January but it was so many items I got tired of trying to keep track of how much was purged, but it was alot.  When the mood strikes to go through a specific category it is easy to make decisions and be ruthless.  I know that I have cleaned out at least 200 items (probably more) this year mostly this January.  Was even able to empty and pitch 2 older jewelry boxes.  I still have more than enough jewelry left.

AND...here is the best part, I took the gold and sterling silver items to the gold buyer and I am now several thousand dollars richer. Yay for me! Instead of sitting in jewelry boxes unused, it earned me a goodly amount of cash and I will not miss any of what is now gone.   The costume pieces I will take to consignment this week.

When we were at the gold store DH looked around at the coins and got to thinking about a can of silver and old coins that has been sitting for years in a cabinet.  He took that to the gold dealer the next day and came home with close to another $l,000.

I have also purged the last couple weeks 11 items of clothes, 5 pair shoes, a skillet and 3 office supplies.

Got home yesterday...from Florida/70's to CT SNOW, in the 20's. Sigh. The snow was overnight, is not a blizzard and actually IS pretty today.

In the mood to get rid of things today.

This morning...tossed another Quart sized plastic container (from bought soups) I re-use for "storing homemade soups." I'm down to two Qt size, from 5. I usually store soups in individual 1/2 quart containers anyway.

Went through all creams in a bathroom drawer...like for poison ivy, bug bites, rashes...unfortunatley (or fortunately, if I need one!)...all are well within dates...a few having 2026 dates. One I have a duplicate of but I just saved them both. Anyone wish to lay odds on how often these get used, if ever, before 2026? Lol. hm.

Threw out a Gilette razor you can buy blades for...I had two different kinds, kept the only one that's the type I actually would buy blades for, the other one was a weird style. Not sure I've ever seen blades for that style. I've been using only disposables lately anyhoo, but don't might having one just in case.

Went through all the dentist give-aways & consolidated to one bag. Took out two small toothpastes to store in my travel toiletry bags, as I used up what I brought with me this time.

Ok...WHAT do YOU do with the 8000 flosses that accumulate from the dentist?? I will NEVER use these up, hate to just toss them, but seriously don't have anywhere to donate them.

That's it for now...going to continue to go through bathroom stuff today...not sure much will be tossed but I want to see what I have, organize, see what I truly need, and IF I can hopefully toss something.

@KathyM23 Great job! And extra cash on top of things...Win/win! I have some scrap jewelry (and old useless coins, for that matter too) I need to bring to my local Gold/Silver guy.

Also threw out recycles, and some cardboard boxes from deliveries.

Threw out an old sponge.

Threw out two plants...one dead annual, the last to go from porch/summer, and one that bit the dust on my windowsill while I was away. Smiley Sad It never even needed water but once a week so I don't know why it suddenly died, but I will replace with something new soon.

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

@amyb   My dentist must be cheap, never, ever have gotten a toothbrush, floss or mini travel toothpaste.  He only gives you the bill!  😜

I did take some gold jewelry last year.  My high school ring, and a long chain, a few bracelets, and some missing gold earrings.  I did have a bag of items, but I did get near $2200.  I was shocked.  I saw a lady in there and they said she goes to garage and estates sales, and must sell a lot. They knew her by name.  The high school ring was in my jewelry box, not worn for 45 years. I think I got nearly $300 for that.  I know when I bought it I paid $32 for it.

I bought two QVC pop it racks on the January free shipping day, so trying to purge and organize more in the basement.

@lynnie61 You've now got me contemplating adding my own ugly high school ring to my gold to trade. Mine has also sat for 45 years! In fact, recently, I took my mom's out to wear for a while...as it's much more feminine, looks collegiate, classic, more streamlined and feminine. If I want that school ring look, (it's nice sometimes to wear with a classic, sporty outfit and the rest of my classic gold jewelry)...anyway, when I want that look I'll wear my mom's not my high school ring ever. (It is that ugly, chunky guy's style, only smaller for a woman, we all got back then.) It's only 10k gold...was yours 10 or 14k? I really think you got me thinking to let it go, which I'd never thought I'd do before and yet will NEVER wear it.

Re: your dentist.. MUST be "cheap" as almost every dentist I've had has given little travel freebies...toothbrush, floss and toothpaste. ....and a substantial bill too! Hey...I got some floss I can share with ya?! 😂

Re: Declutter 2025: What Have You Purged Today?

@amyb   It was 10k, I thought it was 14k but wasn't.  I did ask her what portion of the 2200 was the ring.  It was 299.  She said it was 10k not 14k.  Still, I was happy with that.

I mentioned on this thread before Christmas that I am a speech language pathologist who has been working mainly with children birth to 5 for most during my 33 year career.

In my current position I evaluate preschool students for special education services.  I don't do direct therapy very much so I don't need all the toys I saved from my own children nor do I need all the therapy materials I have collected throughout the years.  I plan to stay in my current position until I retire in 9 years so I won't regret getting rid of that stuff.

I gave away some toys to needy families at our preschool as Christmas presents and I plan to do that next year as well.  I may also donate some toys to Toys for Tots during the holidays next year.

But there are some toys I would like to offer our preschool teachers and therapists.

I would also like to offer other speech language pathologists in the district some of my therapy materials.

So this weekend I plan to take inventory and make a list of items to offer.  Then on Monday I will send out the list so my co-workers.  I am trying to make room where I keep the therapy toys to move toys that my 23 year old DD wants to hold onto into that space and free up some space in her closets.

I might also tackle going through my file cabinet where I have stored handouts from conferences I have attended over the years.  I haven't referred to them in years so it is time for them to go and possibly get rid of the file cabinet.

I posted two lists - one for the toys to the preschool staff and one to my fellow SLPs for the therapy materials on Saturday.  As of this morning all items have been requested and by next Friday I will have them out of the house!

All of my husbands meds and supplies are out of the house now.  I am moving on to other areas of decluttering items that will be donated to Union Mission, realizing that what hasn't been used recently needs to leave this house.

@RedTop you are doing a terrific job of purging! Thank you for posting your progress as you are an inspiration. Bless you!
