@amyb wrote:Little purge this morning...
I was reflecting on this...maybe a help to this process is thinking of a "category" you can streamline, let go of...
For me, I've been going through a few bedroom bureau and armoire drawers where I had small jewelry boxes I'd still kept, when I have a standing mirrored armoire (pretty full but still can fit some things), and two smaller jewelry boxes. Plus a Joan Rivers hanging jewelry bag in my closet! I used to keep the original boxes anyway, for when I either consigned or "thought" I'd list on Ebay (I'm likely NEVER going to bother with that!) Decided this is a "category" I no longer need to keep. Consignment shops never want the boxes. And, like I said, I'll never be doing Ebay, if I'm honest.
So today I tossed 4 more boxes I had in my armoire.
Small thing, however these are smaller, more shallow drawers and this opened up nice space for what is there, rather than having them completely stuffed. I'd say in the past few months I've tossed about 8-10 of these original boxes taking up storage space.
Again a real small thing, but just like when we do "one small area" of the home, I think this category thing is good too. Like think of a lifestyle choice, change where you can let go of formerly stored things. I always saved ALL these boxes, which I've never needed... no more!
This might sound like micro, non earth shattering advice, lol...but anywhere I can let go of "holding on" I feel good about!!
@amyb - You are right, anywhere you can let go of something and open up some space so that your home functions beter and you FEEL better about it is a win!

@homedecor1 wrote:Wow!!! What a productive day! I hired a guy to remove the old built in shelving in my garage and to empty out the attic. It took several hours but was worth it and best $$ I've spent😊. I bought several shelving units to use.
My decor and more is organized and more importantly, 2 trips to the dump later my attic is empty💃💃. No more "looking" for someone to climb up there to get my seasonal decor.
I truly laughed (and cried) at the stuff my dear late husband carted with him when we moved here -- even brought the snow shovels (we moved to FL)😂😂
But the saddest thing he had his Army uniform stored up there with his dog tags in the pocket😔 always a proud Veteran. It's going to be cleaned and I'll hang in his closet where it belongs.
I would post pictures of before & after which are truly amazing BUT system keeps telling me "file to large".
Anyway, I feel great about how it turned out😊😊😊
@homedecor1 - I am so glad that everything turned out the way you want it. That's awesome that you will have hubbys uniform and dog tags cleaned and in the closet. We owe a lot to our veterans and need to remember that.

ps I retrieved my little "Snoopy" bulletin board from garbage! About fell in the can trying to find it - heck it brought such joy, how could I toss it?! Iwas crying remembering placing it in my college dorm, sorority and first apartment! It needs to stay with me!
@Fifi1 - I am glad that you decided to keep that! If you feel that strongly about an item that it absolutely needs to stay. Decluttering is also about making room for the things we love. Maybe someday down the road you will let it go, but if not, that's okay too!

Seriously considering getting rid of chaise lounge chairs (not comfortable) and replacing them with folding gravity chairs. QVC has some lounge chairs as the TSV, but they aren't quite what I wanted.

Garage sale season has officially kicked off around here! Hubby and I don't do a lot of garage saling but we like to hit the community wide/subdivision sales if we're free and see what we can get for a bargain. We find so many brand new items, less than retail.
We went out Thursday and picked up quite a few items. My son is in college and is hoping to move out in a couple of years so he specifically asked me to look for a couple of home items for him, which I found. We could outfit an entire apartment with the things we find at garage sales if he wanted.
We will have to find a space to store his stuff for him for the next couple of years as he continues to accummulate items for a potential place of his own. So, I have to resign myself to the fact that we will have a lot of extra stuff sitting around for a while until he goes, and that is hard for me. I need to try to find a space out of the way that we can use for his stuff that won't bother me.

@DecorDiva wrote:@amyb - don't minimize the decluttering of small jewelry boxes. It's not the item, it's the process, and sometimes the emotions brought up at the thought of letting something go. Everything contributes to creating a new mindset.
@DecorDiva Thank you! And that last line...so true! I love the encouragement on this thread.

@lynnie61 wrote:@amyb Well, during the move, I have a whole new summer shoe wardrobe! I found a Rubbermaid in the closet I rarely used, full of sandals, that I had forgotten about. 😉. Vionics, a pair of Alegria. Somehow, I thought I lost that pair. A really cute pair of teal Vionics. So cute. Goes to show you what we don't even know we have. So no summer sandal purchases needed this year.
Wow...good for you!! You got to "shop your own closet"...and you unearthed what you'd forgotten just in time to use for summer. That's great!!

@AuntG I agree, those regular chaise lounges aren't always comfortable. I got one of those gravity chairs while we were staying at a cabin on Cape Cod some years back. I still have it. About $80.00. Nicely made. Many places have them now, not just QVC (like if you'd rather see them, or try them in person.) I really love it...so relaxing to lay back in that zero-gravity position. And when you want to sit up and read or sip a drink it is comfortable in the regular positions too. I'm in CT, where we have a store called "Job Lot", which is a discount store...I've seen them there for less than I paid. Probably Home Depot, Walmart, Target has them too.
Anyway, just giving you my vote for the zero-gravity chaise!

More is definitely coming in than is going out right now, and I'm afraid that's just how it's going to be for a while. I will have to try to not let it bother me for the next few years and just try to organize as best I can so all of the extra stuff doesn't get in the way too much.
I started another small donation bag with one book and a small sunscreen that I won't use.
I tossed a small trash can that was in my son's room. I found him one (at a garage sale) that has a lid that he'd been wanting but I wouldn't spend the money on it. This one was only $4. The one in his room had broken in a couple of places so it wasn't even nice enough to donate.
Hubby tossed an old phone that wouldn't turn off.
Recycled two boxes. I also did a bit more shredding and emptied the shredder twice. My bookcases need some attention soon, they are way too cluttered. Good thing they are in the loft out of the way where no one sees them.

Hi all,
Just a few small updates..
Dropped off items at consignment yesterday, two clothing, one crossbody. One other top had a small spot I didn't see, and I'd wanted to wash this before I went, then forgot, so I brought it anyway. She told me if I washed it and the spot came out (it's tiny) to bring it back. It's a pretty D&C waffle knit top I like the look of but never did much for me, so I never reached for it. I have too many in the same category I prefer. Anyway, I'll wash it and either just donate or bring it back to consignment if I gather other things.
Had a $38 check there. Didn't think I'd have any or much, as I hadn't brought much there the last few times. Every little bit is appreciated.
Went through a small decorative box on my desk that holds business cards to make sure it's up to date...tossed a bunch of duplicate, obsolete or irrelevent to me now, business cards.
That's all for now~Have a nice Sunday!
