Re: Declutter 2020: What have you purged today?

Yesterday we donated small kitchen appliances, kitchen supplies and equipment, clothing and household goods to a local thrift store.

Note:  They were not allowed to accept a Dell computer monitor.  Does anyone have any idea who will accept it?

@AnikaBrodie  I have taken computer monitors to our recycling center before, but it's been years.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

Thanks for your reply.  I have found an organization that will accept the monitor at a charge of 75 cents/pound.  They are a group who help families and individuals in need to get back on their feet.  I'm trying to find the weight of the monitor but so far have had no luck.  DH moves it and I know it's heavy and bulky to carry.   I'll keep checking.

Our PA county used to set aside a day every few years to donate TVs, computers, monitors, radios and other electronic equipment.  They haven't had that for at least several years.  I'll call the township office to inquire if a donation day might be in the foreseeable future.

Getting rid of stuff has ben nearly impsible this year. There's an old (but clean) queen size memory foam mattress sitting in my garage until I have some options

First actual purge in a while.

Like many, I have collected clothes and maybe 3 pairs of shoes for when Goodwill reopens. Someone in my neighborhood posted online that her friend was in dire need of clothes in my size range. Not sure what "dire" means, but I just put out 2 large bags of clothes to the driveway to be picked up this morning. Happy to have them out of the garage and basement and most were already bagged and taking up space in my garage or car.

@queendiva - Isn't that nice when we "purge" and feel like the items are actually going to be put to good use? Win/win!

Re: Declutter 2020: What have you purged today?

Several days ago my younger son and I went thru the school supplies that he brought home. They were just tossed in a trash bag in the bottom of his closet because the school cleaned out his locker for him and just handed him a bag of "stuff". Isn't that lovely?

Anyway, it was just sitting on the floor of his closet so we went thru that. A few small things got tossed, papers and 2 notebooks. Most of it actually was hardly used and got put away in case we want it for future use.

We also ended up tossing a ratty t-shirt and a pair of tennis shoes that he's outgrown. We added one pair of almost new tennis shoes to the donate bag.

I peeked in their bathroom drawers and tossed 2 expired sunscreens and a really old scrap of kids toothpaste that hasn't been used in years.

I bought some new paper plate holders and tossed 3 old ones.

@rnmom : smart to go through the school supplies and keep what can still be used. The cost of those supplies really adds up in August and the kids do not need all new every year. In addition, perfectly good supplies do not end up in a landfill.

Re: Declutter 2020: What have you purged today?

Shoes have been the one thing that has been going out in our trash in the last few weeks.  I’ve tossed 3 pair since January, and both daughters have been tossing their well worn shoes as well.

I just tossed a bag of burnable items downstairs, including the basket and colorful leaf fillers that came as a fall floral arrangement originally.

I am enjoying tossing everything in the trash for pickup, or our burnable pile, and not handling it again.

@AnikaBrodie   Maybe a women's shelter could use the monitor or a school.  We donated a station wagon, years ago, to a Boy's Club, plan to do the same with the SUV one day.

Re: Declutter 2020: What have you purged today?

@queendiva - Now that they are in middle school and high school they mostly just need notebooks, folders, loose paper, pencils, erasers, etc. thank goodness. But their notebooks and folders from this past year were barely even used, so I definitely saved them.

When they were in elementary school, omg, the lists were huge! Crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue sticks, note cards, dry erase markers and erasers, scissors, pencil boxes, notebooks, etc, etc, etc. It got VERY expensive. I'm glad those days are over.
