Many, many years ago I saw a staircase with custom spindles that were made in the silhouette of women (clothed) that was quite impressive as each silhouette was unique. Someone had way too much time on their hands and loved using a scroll saw. It was impressive and unique though. I suspect a picky building inspector would have found an issue or two as there were some places (near the heads) that likely exceeded the maximum spacing allowed, but as a combination art piece/spindles, it was interesting. The spindles were shaped somewhat like the silhouettes in the attached photo.

Imagine each of those images cut out and used as a spindle. It was unique and impressive. I'd never seen it before and I've never seen it done since then. It made an impression though.

I'd prefer a cleaner line style.

I kind of like them.
