I had to deal with free standing sinks in the dorm rooms of three of my kids.I used Velcro also, but mounted it on the outside since the underside was really rough and unfinished. It wasn't hard to do since moms from previous students who were in the room the year before saved the measurements and passed them on to the incoming girls...they stored their shower things in a cute carrier with their school colors on them.

I need a counter top to hold my makeup mirror.  No way would a pedestal sink work.
