I like a cotton terry and flat cotton towel in the kitchen for different uses.  I've had terry towels pill badly after being laundered a few times.  When checking the washing instructions - they state wash on cold and with like colors.  I usually wash towels on hot.  And, I don't often have enough like color towels for a load.  Set me straight, please.  Are towels laundered fully with cold water?  Are you all washing like color towels in a separate load?  Thanks much!

@22eyesblue   To me towels are towels...unless they are my 'cleaning' towels/rag.

Bath towels and kitchen towels are washed on cold, extra rinse with a boosting agent in the water.

I like cotton kitchen towels, I just don't like how the hems roll after the first wash.

I wash kitchen towels in warm water.  I wash them with hand towels from my powder rooms.  I mostly need to pretreat kitchen towels first because they have stains on them.

I tend use them instead of potholders.  Most of mine are flat cotton.  They never pill.

Re: cotton terry kitchen towels

Any of my colored kitchen towels, I just throw them in with the dark load.  Wash beautifully.  I swear I've had some kitchen towels for years.  The good ones last and last.  Hundreds of washes. Still  look new or almost new.

I get a lot of mine from Kohls on great clearance after the season then add a coupon, and get them for a really good price.  Use them a couple of days, and then swap them out.

I wash all towels in hot water.  I have two baskets for all household towels - dark or light colors.  (00ps, I have another for white ones.).  I sort by color.  Dry at medium temperature.  No problem with rolling hems or shrinking.  I too have cotton dish drying towels as well as looped terry.

Re: cotton terry kitchen towels

I wash all towels in hot water and use bleach. I have noticed the microfiber kitchen towels say cold water. No thanks; I will not purchase them.

One exception is the decorative towels in my guest bath that are never used. I do not use bleach in those when I am freshening them.

@22eyesblue  If your terry cloth towels are pilling, you may have to go to a nicer, more expensive towel.  The quality is just not there anymore.  I like to use terry for my kitchen hand towels and flour sacks for dish drying.  I have an embroidery machine so I can put cute things on my dish towels.  Costco carries some nice cotton kitchen towels as does Crate and Barrel.  Cold water is the new recommendation.  Good luck

My cotton kitchen towels have never pilled. But, I don't buy cheap ones. Some are ten years old.
I wash them in warm water.

I wash all bath towels and kitchen towels in warm water and put in dryer.  All white cotton towels are washed in hot water.

All my towels are 100% cotton.  (If fabric is a blend it can pill and will not last as long).  Darks get washed together and lighter get washed together.

None of my towels have ever had any problems with hem rolling, pilling, holes, etc.

I buy quality towels though.
