Has anyone done this?  I'm looking into this for our pool deck.  The thought of digging up the old concrete (the work and mess) and putting down either new concrete or real stone (the cost) makes me tremble.

I understand your concerns.  Very difficult and messy. We have a brick pool surround - if you do take out the concrete, we have found the brick is nice because if something goes wrong, you can just replace the damaged area.  I have seen people put a wooden deck over concrete but it didn't seems to weather well. Good luck figuring out a workable solution.

We did this to a large drive way with a stamped in brick pattern. It looked good for a few years then began to fade and chip. Finally just busted up the drive and repoured concrete.

At a different house now and trying to decide what to do about a large patio. There is an arylic material that can be used in resurfacing. Its the same as what is used to coat garage floors.

You can cover existing concrete with an epoxy coating that's essentially an acrylic cement and is most often textured and colored. It's attractive and cheaper than a complete redo. No idea how long it lasts or what level of prep work is needed, but do know several condo pools in my area have used it successfully.

@ScrapHappy    This is a new treatment for concrete. Believe it or not, this is NOT wood but a concrete stain treatment:

May be an image of outdoors and tree

I've seen pictures of this but none as good as this one.  I like it but I don't think it would look right around our pool.
