Just an idea for you to apply to your own personal preferences:
The rooms in my homes have always been different, as my overall style is what I would call "casual-eclectic". But there have also always been accents of green in every single one, as it's my favorite color and I'm a nature lover.
I guess you could say that the different shades of green tie my entire home together, whether it's an apartment or a house. And that decorating with pops of a second or alternate favorite color in each room could bring even more pleasure.

Some people are now doing the same color, in different hues, throughout the house as mentioned here.. I'm thinking of starting with the new light gray and work from there.
I still like wallpaper and no matter the current fad, if I still like it I keep it.

That's exactly what my home looks like.
I have an open concept, and I have one neutral color that grounds the whole first floor and then elements of blues and greens that tie everything together.
The only rooms that are completely different are my kids' bedrooms. LOL. They choose their color palette.

Our home is painted throughout in a light neutral shade with white moldings, medium-tone hardwood floors, and light neutral carpeting. It provides a quiet, classic backdrop for what I call our "upscale country" or "country manor" décor. The upper part of the wall in our formal dining room is emerald green, with white picture frame moldings below. I use lots of greens, creams, beiges, rose, and terra cotta in fabrics and furniture, with splashes of other colors in art, florals, etc. We have traditional wallpaper patterns in the kitchen and bathrooms. The overall effect is warm, traditional, and comfortable. I want color in my surroundings, but I don't like strong, jarring colors or dramatic color changes from one room to another. I like the color to "flow" and the overall effect to be harmonious and calming.
