A coffee (or tea table) is a must for me. The room loses its balance without one.

I like my 40+ year-old coffee table so much that I just had it refinished! I also have end tables...they match each other but not the coffee table.

I have one...dh purchased as a Christmas gift...mission style, long oval in shape...I remarked I liked it and he bought it without my knowledge.... l liked it but did not want it, ha!
I would never get rid of it but would prefer something else....it was expensive, plus we had custom glass cut for the top. I would move to to another room but that won't work in our space. I would rather have a couple of the soft sided cubes with lids for storage.

I don't have one in the family (TV watching) room because both ends of the sofa recline and a coffee table would have to sit too far out in the middle of the room.
I do have one in the living room because if we use that sofa there must be a space for guests to put drinks, snacks, etc. And it gives me more space for decor items. The coffee table in the living room has a glass top with a display drawer underneath where my DH displays his collection of Zippo lighters.

We have two end tables....and actually we have a coffee table that came with the set of tables....BUT even though we have a decent size living room..we felt the coffee table took away so much space so we do without it and the living room looks more open

I have them, two end tables and a coffee table in the family room. They're in need of refinishing and once that is done I plan on putting them in the formal living room (which is hardly used). I'm keeping them and refinishing them for 2 reasons: they were expensive and they match my dining room set in the room across from it. I don't plan on having a coffee table in the living room when we get new furniture, just end tables...maybe.

In the living room I have a traditional glass top coffee table, a single whitewashed wooden end table and on the other side of the sofa is a rattan storage cube that doubles as an end table.
In the family room I have a very contemporary glass top coffee table. One side of the sofa there is a set of teak nesting tables and on the other I have a small antique trunk that I use as the other end table.
I couldn't live without my coffee tables but I could see using an ottoman in place of one. I don't like everything to match but to coordinate.

I'm curious where you did put it.

Perhaps the dog needs trained to leave things put out on the coffee table alone. Our dogs may have grabbed something if food was out and no one was watching it, but they definitely knew better when someone was present.
