Re: Changing rooms within the house

Here is a laugh for you.................

I was a room changer extra- ordanaire (excuse spelling)..........lol............ I changed and changed and changed things around almost daily....I loved decorating.

One night my DH went to bed in the dark and fell on the floor as he went to climb into bed but what he thought was the bed was a white throw rug on the floor the bed was way over on the other side of the room. I called out to him....."I'm over here honey".......lol.....We never lived that one down.

Even my kids would wake up not knowing where they were as I would change everything around during the nite when they were asleep ........(aka: mommy dearest)

I see now that was not a very good thing ,I guess .I must have had a problem of some sort...lol......I never change anything now. I guess at 75, I have out grown it...........lol

Re: Changing rooms within the house

Our great room was a dining and living combo. After a couple years we changed the dining room part to a lounge nook. I put a small table between two chairs and added a lamp and some books for reading.

Then when we found that we were really not using it for that purpose I took the table out and put an antique buffet and just left the chairs there. We moved them into the great room if we needed them for company.

I don't miss the dining room part and when I have company for dinner I set up my folding buffet table and put a nice table cloth on it and use the chairs from the dining nook to seat everyone. It works out well.

I love moving furniture from room to room. The past couple weeks I have had bouts of the flu and my back acting up. But today I joined the world of living and after I take down all the Christmas stuff I plan on moving in my chest of drawers that is in the guest room and put it in the dining nook off the kitchen. The chest is black with silver knobs and I can use it to store all my linens and use the linen closet to store my Christmas decor.

Change is good for the soul and for your spirit. Enjoy your new look.

I would say DO IT! You might put in some extra work, but the worst that can happen is that you would hate it and have to change it back. That's not a terrible outcome, IMO. Enjoy and I hope you like the change.

Re: Changing rooms within the house

Luv2--I really think you're on the right track--however the space functions best for you, is how it should be used! To show how rooms have changed over time, in our 120 year old Victorian house, of course there is a small front parlor--so no "living room" (actually, perfect for us.) A fairly large room that was originally the kitchen is now our dining room. (My small kitchen was an early add-on to the back of the house.) The largest of the first floor rooms that was the original dining room, functions as our den. At the turn of the last century, life centered around the dining room, and now most of the time is spent in that largest room, as a den. Whatever is efficient and convenient use of the space and suits your lifestyle will work for you! As far as the sink overlooking the living room, think of a loft or open plan where these rooms might be juxtaposed. In our former townhouse, our neighbor's kitchen overlooked an area which she decorated as a formal space and it looked lovely! Go for it!

Re: Changing rooms within the house

I think the idea of switching the use of rooms in your home is fine and opens up a lot of new and creative possibilities..........but I'd want the living area adjacent and open to the kitchen to be relaxed, fairly informal, and up to the challenges of daily living -- especially if you have kids (or a messy husband).

Re: Changing rooms within the house

Do it! I once had a formal dining room that I turned into my computer room. We just didn't need it (the dining room) and I wanted the space for my own. It was great. I liked it because it was in between the kitchen and living room. Made it perfect for cooking and watching TV.

Sounds great, and you can always do that with certain pieces going into different rooms, or even closets or the bathroom. Give them a new life to be used as something they're not necessarily called by or designed for.

Re: Changing rooms within the house

I've always wanted to turn the family room, that's off the kitchen, into a formal dining room, except the fireplace is there and I don't think we'd utilize a formal dining room as much as we use the family room and living room.
