I'm thinking about moving furniture from different rooms in the house and changing use of the rooms.
Has anyone done this?
I'm thinking about switching the Living Room with the Family Room, however the kitchen counter (sink) looks over into the current family room.
Our kitchen is nice, so I don't worry about having the rooms next to each other, but do you think it would be weird to be looking into a semi-formal room from the kitchen sink? Ha!
My LR furniture is comfortable, but it has a couple antique setees that I upholstered in light fun fabrics so they don't look "old".
The reason I'm thinking about doing this is because it would be nice to utilize the larger room more often (and that's the living room).

Good morning. Do It.....you can always change it back if it doesn't look good or work out. I live in a very small country house and change furniture around. Its fun, changes up the look. Never dull in my house. I use those EZ moving furniture sliders........so great to use, just push the furniture around and save your back. Have fun.

We turned the living room into a formal dining room, we already had a family room, did not use the formal living room, now as a dining room it is used every evening, breakfast and lunch we have in the eat in kitchen.

I might give it a shot. We have a wine credenza in the living room it's super heavy over 300lbs I could probably keep it where it's at. I'd have to do this with my kids because my husband would go nuts with the way I change my mind and move stuff everywhere! Ha!
One of those furniture glides is still on the back foot of the wine cabinet.
The only thing is that I'd have to get more furniture if I do this and if I don't like it, then what?
I'd love to do something with the formal dining room. We aren't using it as much since our oldest has gone to college and the other kids are in HS. They are so busy with sports and it's just a different time in our lives.
I'm so torn.

I have several friends who have "done away with" their formal dining room. They remove the chandelier and recreate the room.
What my friends created:
Game room
Homework/study room (no computers in the childrens' rooms)
Craft room
Added french doors and created a home office
My DH and I toy with this idea, in the next few years I think we will go down to one eating area. We have 2 eating areas (formal and casual) that both seat 6-8 people.
Use your space to meet your needs, Enjoy!

We have 2 dining areas too. The formal isn't used that often but the informal is used daily. That is one of my problems. Currently the informal table is located in the family room. If I switch the rooms I don't have a place for the informal dining. We could use the formal for everyday, but I'd have to get rid of that furniture and buy something to hold my china or get rid of my informal dining furniture, but I really like it.
I have wood floors in the living room and I'd have to get a large area rug for the room, however my dog likes to pee on rugs, so I removed all of the carpet from the house. Ha!

Try it for six months. I have been thinking of doing something similar to change things up.

We have a big eat-in kitchen that will seat 6 comfortably but I would never give up the dining room. I love too much sitting around the table having a long meal. We don't need the space for anything else either, so it's no problem for us. People I think like to sit around the table and relax, and that way we aren't distracted by the kitchen, food and activities there.
