I have/had pets, so I would recommend no wall-to wall carpet, just rugs here in there if ones wishes.
But I also recently discovered a great company that has fantastic looks with easy DIY quality "carpet design squares":

Nope, I don't work for them LOL. They were just highly-recommended by others with cats and/or dogs. 8)

We live in Nebraska. Most of carpeting in the whole house, mainly because we have 6 months of winter and carpeting seems warmer. The only place we have other is in the bathrooms and we have wood in the kitchen.

When I bought my townhouse, it had carpeting throughout, except for the kitchen. Eventually, I replaced the carpeting in the kitchen, dining room, foyer and powder with hardwood. The living room is a step-down and I left that carpeted.
When I replaced my mattress and box springs a few years ago, I was appalled at the dust that had accumulated under my bed. I was sure I was vacuuming there!!! So I replaced that with hardwood and invested in a Mint robot floor cleaner. I breathe so much better! I do have some throw rugs down, but I'm very pleased with the hardwood in the bedroom.

We put hardwood in the dining room and hall. I don't find it difficult to keep clean. But in our master bedroom (carpeted) we have a Temperpedic mattress which weighs a TON. Such an ordeal to move to clean under the bed properly! I'd like to replace our carpet in there with wood to match the hall if possible- I'd use nice rugs for warmth 'tho. I think people should put in what they want and is practical for them.
I just bought a new steam vac, a Bissell, and it does such a great job. We had put in very good carpeting in one bedroom when our first was born, and that was 24 years ago! The steam vac brought it back to it's original color (I forget it was a light jade green, not actually khaki, YIKES!)

When we first moved here, I had all the carpets removed and restored the original wood floors --- even in the bedrooms. Although it's a lovely look (I put area rugs in the bedrooms), it actually was not the smartest thing to do. It's definitely warmer and cozier to have carpets in the bedrooms. I feel like the wood floors make them colder. We just put a brand new carpet in my toddler's bedroom and we all LOVE it! It's the "go-to" place for hanging out and playing around with her.
That being said, I personally would never do wall to wall carpets in my home. I think the bedrooms are fine though.

I have many pets so carpet is a no-no for me. i Have laminate wood all downstairs and carpet upstairs. The dogs are not allowed upstairs so it stays clean for guests. Master bedroom is also downstairs. I buy inexpensive area rugs to warm up the room so if it gets ruined I can easily replace it.

I used to love carpet and still have it in my present home in the den, dining and living room and the bedrooms. Its a pain to take care of and even though we have no pets or kids at home now, it still gets dirty in the traffic area. I have my own shampoo machine to clean it but I'm ne ver pleased with the outcome. I would tear it all out and put down the rough plank dark floors if my husband would agree but he doesn't want to spend the $$$$ !!
If we were buying a new house I would definitely go wood floors !
