My favorite is the stone backsplash, different and very appealing.  I am not a fan of subway tiles but I do like the painted beanboard. Tiles are lovely depending on the color and design.  If I had tiles as a backsplash, I would have tiles with a design placed throughout  just to perk it up.

While the pics of the luxury homes' kitchens are attractive, I would never limit my idea of beauty to having to be plain.

IMO there is a plethora of beautiful patterned tiles & a plethora of beautiful plain tiles.

These are the tiles I picked for my kitchen. Each small tile is 2"X2", & they come placed like this. I have dark blue cabinets on the bottom, cream color cabinets on the top, quartz countertops with some tiny gray lines, & small round nickel handles. My appliances are stainless. My washer & dryer in the laundry room are navy blue. All my walls are cream.

The beadboard backsplash is nice looking.

The marble white and gray veined stone slab backsplash is very attractive.

Also like that stone mortared backsplash - has sort of a grotto look.  Also wonder how easy it is to clean.  Don't care for the shelving and cabinets they paired with that backsplash, though.

My current house had an orange mosaic backsplash in the kitchen.  I of course replaced it but I didn't pick a neutral replacement.  I replaced with a blue mosaic.  Ten years later I still like it.

I think back splashes are the jewelry of a room---I love seeing them and the never ending possibilities that are used. But I HATE cleaning grout--the worst job ever, IMO. If I were to ever change out backsplashes, I would choose solid slabs of material--in both the kitchen and the bathroom. Would not do tiles on the floor with grout--did that in my former house and had to clean them---OMG!!!! Having a baby with no meds was easier and faster!!! I love the look of ship lathe and stone and handmade tiles--but would never want them. In this apt i am in there are granite counter tops and then 4" stripe of the same as the back splash---so now I have to scrub that little ledge as well at scrub the grout at the bottom---HATE IT  !!!!

@Oznell ... I love the look of the first kitchen with the bead board. I love bead board period !! ... in any room. I watch a lot of HGTV and fell in love with it !! I don't have any in my home but if l ever did add it, l would have the wall behind my bed in white bead board. I know we're not talking about bedrooms, but l wouldn't be able to do anything different with the backsplash in my kitchen now.

I prefer to have a little color and/or texture in a backsplash.  I love all the ones here except for the beadboard....it's just not my style whatsoever.  My favorite is the square subway tile with the bright sheen followed by the gray stacked tile.

I redid my kitchen decades ago and chose Corian.  It was a white background with a speckled pattern. It still looks great today, I am very fortunate!

I have cream Corian and matching double sinks; no seam.  Love them!
