Hi, I suggest a carpet cleaning company can clean them. I agree, having them picked up, cleaned and returned would be a hassle and costly. The rug we purchased for new hardwood flooring is a 10x13 Kathy Ireland from HomeGoods. Not thousands of dollars - I think we paid 399.00 and thats my plan when it needs it. Our dogs are not allowed to lay on it, they have their own cushy beds. If the dogs were allowed to lay on it, it would be filthy in a week 😩.

PS I wanted to add...we had a super excellent prof cleaning company we use to use and they said absolutely no problem shampooing any area rug for us. My daughter used them and for an approx dining space rug 6x9, they charged $69.

All our bids came from carpet cleaning companies.  I did not know who else to ask.

We do allow our dogs on our floors and we and our guests walk on them with our shoes on.  Life is too short to worry about who walks on our floors.

I think buying a new rug for $399 and replacing every 18 -24 months could be ideal solution.  It will also keep the decor fresh.

PS- I forget about all the times a dog throws up on the rug or I someone spills whatever......

@Abrowneyegirl I have a rug shampooer and in the spring or summer, my dh helps me take our rugs onto the deck on a warm, sunny day and I shampoo them outside and bring them back in. They dry quickly with the right weather. The biggest we have is 8x10.

If we had a deck......

We of course have a patio Smiley Sad and not large enough to fit the rugs, the patio has curves and steps.

Cleaning a rug out on the deck in the sunshine I would think would be great!

Isn't that just the price we pay for having pets?  I wouldn't buy cheap rugs because they won't last and they won't look good.  Just like you buy pet food and pay vet bills;  you have to factor into your budget the cost of having your rugs professionally cleaned once or twice a year and cleaning them yourself in between.  I can sympathize, we have wall to wall carpet and when we had our beloved cat; we had to pay to have the carpets cleaned 3 times a year.  It was expensive.  In the old house, a 9 room house with hard wood floors; there was the expense of the area rugs upstairs and downstair but with a dog and a cat; we didn't exactly have a choice.  This is the longest I've ever been without a pet and I will be honest, when I start thinking that it would be nice to have another cat or even a small dog....I do think about the carpet situation.

I have wool area rugs all over my house and they are easy to spot clean or use a rug cleaning machine on. I've had dogs and now a cat who vomits at least once a month on my rugs and no stains. My hard wood floors are 37 years old and have a patina, but other wise look like new. If I would not have covered the floors with area rugs, I have a feeling they would be a mess from my pets.

In our previous home we had area rugs - the largest was 8ft round. We also had large dogs.Once a year I had them taken up and professionally cleaned. It was much less expensive than having to get wall to wall steam cleaned. While the rugs were away from home I would wax and polish the floors.

If you have the outside space to dry them in nice weather, I'd invest in a Bissell and clean them yourself.

The investment in the machine will be less than the cost of one cleaning of the whole house full of rugs.

You can do it whenever you need or want, and in the warm weather, they should dry by the end of the day.

You will also be able to spot clean spills, accidents, usually without picking the rug up, as a Bissell used properly doesn't soak the carpet.

And you can use the machine to clean your upholstery on a regular basis, as well as your car seats and carpets.

My Bissell is one of the best investments I've ever made.

I have hardwood floors throughout my home. My rugs are just throw rugs that I periodically just throw in my washer and dryer. Boom! Good as new again. I wouldn't buy a rug unless I can wash it.

I think when you have pets the best option is to not spend thousands of dollars on an area rug.  I do have one very expensive run in my dining room, but the rest of my area rugs were considerably less expensive.  The fact of the matter is, whenever one of the beasties is preparing to barf, they head for an area rug...

I use our carpet shampoo-er on the area rugs we have,

you need another person to hold it down.

If you do it quickly there should be no damage to the wood floor
