I'm working on a cross stitch project of Christmas cottages. It is from Country Cottage Needleworks. There are 12 cottages in in collection, but I am doing 9 on one piece of fabric that I will frame. Also working on a foundation pieced beach bungalow quilt from a pattern I bought years ago. I like to have at least two different types of projects to do at once.

Unfortunately, no, because I can only do basic mending and hemming. My mom knew how to sew and I always admired people who do. I think it's a great skill.

I am so happy I found this thread! I am the only one I know who still sews. I am currently working on a pique robe for the spring, and a cotton sateen skirt. I am also working on a cross stitch for my best friend-for several years now! The older I get the longer it takes my eyes to focus on the stitches. I sewed all of my daughters clothes when she was little-the best compliment she got was from "Mary Poppins" at a Character Breakfast at Walt Disney World! My daughter was wearing a pink dotted swiss top with white linen shorts with pink dotted swiss trim. "Mary" gave her a big hug, told her she looked so pretty, and brought her over to show "Alice" (in Wonderland), who also loved the outfit and the women both said she had to take a picture with them! My daughter was totally thrilled, and I've always remembered that and thought that it was so nice of them. My daughter was only 4 at the time, and very shy. She doesn't remember much about the trip, but she does remember Mary and Alice making a fuss over her! Sorry-I'm rambling.....
As far as machines I have a Bernina 1650 sewing machine and a Viking serger. I would highly recommend both brands. I keep promising myself that I will spend a lot more time in my sewing room when we retire.....

I learned basic sewing skills in high school Home Ec class - I still have the little apron I made and I actually did a really good job! Many MANY years ago, when I was in my mid-twenties, mini-skirts were the rage along with hip-huggers and bell-bottoms and some other styles that just didn't quite do for me (I could wear them on my own time but not to work!). I had been married for 2 years, had a baby, and was working, and it seemed that all the clothes were made for 16-year olds. I started making all my clothes, from blouses to dresses to pants to jackets, etc. I was so proud of myself when I spent hours making a wool jacket and had the nerve to put in a besom pocket (for those who might not know, this is a pocket that is cut into the body of the garment)--I was scared to death I was going to ruin all the work I had put into it, but I didn't, and got a lot of compliments on it!
I don't do that any more, but my current project is to go through all my clothes and pull out everything that needs alteration, hemming, etc. I have so many clothes that still have the tags on (I'm retired now) and can't wear until I do some altering. I've been buying new things, which is silly when I could go shopping in my own closet if I would just stop procrastinating!

I'm crocheting another winter hat for my 5 month old GD. And, just started on her needlepoint Christmas Stocking with a big smiling snowman on it. Also, just purchased fabric to make DD a floppy fleece jacket (Vogue) that has felted stripes and swirls on the front and back (very eye-catching). Then there's that quilt that needs completion (but my back says "Nooooo") and lots of new projects packed away that I'm just itching to get my fingers on.
p.s. That Vogue pattern cost $25! Talk about sticker shock! It's been that long since I've purchased a Vogue pattern.
