I have renewed my love for sewing when I purchased a new Viking/Husqvarna sewing machine this fall. It replaced a 1975 White sewing machine that was as basic as you can get for sewing machines.
I found a website called pattern review has several reviews of all of the sewing machine lines, and was a good place to get a feel for what would be a good quality machine for your sewing needs. People had good and bad to say, but most everyone agreed that if you could see and touch the machine, it is better than buying blindly on line.
You may want to look at the various fabric stores, as they carry some in their stores, as well as online. Also, HSN has several models of Singer and Janome machines to choose from, and they tend to include things additional presser feet that purchased by themselves, can be quite costly. You can also look at reviews there, and determine if it is worthwhile machine or not.
Good luck with your sewing machine purchase!

After a short while sitting at my sewing table my back starts to hurt and i have to stop, so it doesn't seem like it would be a worthwhile purchase. When I was working i couldn't wait to retire and have time to sit at a sewing machine all day. Now i spend much more time doing cross stitch..
That's my deal, too, HH! That's why I'm settling on the Singer Stylist 7528. But it is still back ordered from where I want to purchase it. Not a rush for me, so I'll just wait. Or if they can't restock, I'll try to get that model some place else. It has tons of favorable reviews and no inherent problems like some of the models like the Curvy..

I hope someone who has experience can tell me how easy is it for a basic sewer to learn to use a serger machine. I have had my eye on one for years! Can't wait to get one but I know it will be a learning curve for me and I worry about threading the machine!
The only thing I have made recently is a shower curtain and it was beautiful!

Go to a shop where they sell machines and ask to try one out - they always have ones set up for demos and customers to try them. I have a White that I love because the entire front part where you thread it opens up and makes it simple to thread and clean.I just brush in there with a paint brush then use a hand vac to pick it up.I hope someone who has experience can tell me how easy is it for a basic sewer to learn to use a serger machine. I'm making a t-shirt quilt for my son's birthday in March. It's about 3/4 of the way done.

I don't sew, but I knit. I've been making prayer shawls which our church gives to those who are sick or grieving.
