Anyone Had Their Kitchen Cabinets Professionally Painted?

I need to update my kitchen and want to have my cabinets painted/glazed professionally.

Any idea how much this would cost?

Thanks in advance.

Try doing it yourself, have you ever used the Annie Sloan paints?

I have a friend who - she and her husband were going to paint their own kitchen cabinets. They started and found it was not a simple job and they were getting questionable results. They gave up and hired someone who took the cabinets down and sprayed them - they look beautiful. However, she says they could have just bought new cabinets for what it cost to have them done. the painter took them down and my friends sanded them - the painter came back each day for 3 days to spray paint them - primer - paint color and a clear coat top, then he rehung them.

I did it in another house we lived in. Rather had it done. I have no idea how much it would cost now, but it wasn't too costly back then. I thought the results looked pretty good, but not nearly as good as I had hoped. However at the time I couldn't afford to purchase new cabinets.

I've also had new cabinets installed in another house we owned and it's definitely the way to go if you can afford it. It just looks so much better.

Paint chips and is difficult to protect, especially above a heated stove.

Kitchen grime and grease are consideration factors, and that is why I personally would never paint kitchen cabinets.

In time they do not stand up to removing grease and grime.

Also to have them pro done would be quite costly. The only way to go if you care to and do not want to pay for new cabinets is to have them all professionally spray painted, and that is quite an expense and not at all labor friendly.

Easier to replace even if not with a very expensive set.

Something attractive but strong enough to take the daily abuse of the kitchen, cooking, grease build up and daily grime.

I had my basement kitchen wood custom cabinets replaced and chose the beautiful glass type cabinets which can be custom ordered with other components. Still cleans like a dream and looks brand new.

My husband gave his pro opinion, and also agreed that full replacement really is the only guaranteed way to go for great time tested results in the long run.

I agree. A really good professional paint job would probably cost as much as new cabinets.

I love our professionally sealed and painted cabinets. However, light paint does chip. The paint is not white-white, and so to touch up would need to match paint. We were gone when this was done, many years ago. I just live with a lighter color better, so I have been pleased with it.

The painter told us that laquer-finish was best, so we went with his suggestion. Woodwork had to be painted to match in the living/dining area also. No paint chipping in there because nothing bumps it.

I love how the DIY shows have HO,s who do this. Personally I think it is a lot more work then shown to get a professional finish.

Painted cabinets are very durable if you are not putting the 250th coat on and you are using the correct kinds of paints and finishes.

Professional painting does not come even close to the cost of new cabinets. We had our cabinets replaced when we did our kitchen last year, and the lowest price for uninstalled units was in the 10K range. Depending on the size of your kitchen and the condition of your cabinets, you can probably get them painted professionally for 2500 to 5000. You don't need to get the interiors painted. Have them do the doors and the framework only.

I painted my previous set of kitchen cabinets myself. They came out really nice, but it was a long, involved process and took a long time to do. I wouldn't go that route unless you're really a DIY person.

Re: Anyone Had Their Kitchen Cabinets Professionally Painted?

Done right, it's a lot of work and one assumes that if the OP wanted a DIY project she wouldn't have asked. The cost is going to depend on the nature, condition and color of your cabinets and what you want as a finished product. It will also depend on how many you have and frankly on who you get to do it, their level of demand and so on. Plan on at least several hundred dollars. Done properly, the cabinets will need to be sanded (at least lightly, if not more), primed and then several coats of paint applied. They will then need to be sealed. I had ancient but sturdy maple cabinets in that hideous orange maple color painted a pretty soft grey and where there were no handles or pulls, had oiled bronze installed to match the sink hardware I selected. They turned out very nicely. A good paint job should require minimal touch-up but yes, even the most professional work is going to require occasional touching up. Unlike stain, which seeps into the wood, paint sits on the surface. Good luck to you!
