Oh no! I broke half of a tooth at lunch today! A few days ago I took a drink of cold cranberry juice and made a face and held the side of my face. Mr. Lily asked if I had a toothache and I did, only at that moment. My guess is that it had a crack in it and it finally broke today. It's a tooth with a filling, so I'm not sure if the dentist can do a crown (hope so!). It only hurts with hot and cold, so this weekend I will drink room temperature liquids and chew on the other side of my mouth until Monday when the dentist is open again. Our dentist gives you his phone number for emergencies, but since I do not have constant pain, I'm going to wait until Monday. Sigh, always something! Woman Frustrated

Always... @EdithEllenLily...  What a shame. Good luck with the fix. Crowns are no fun, but if they can save it, that's a good thing. I had this happen a while back and while they did put on a crown, I had to have a root canal first...

Oh man ... @stevieb! I thought of the root canal, too. I'm hoping 'not' because I don't have pain down in there. It's a pretty clean break. I'm going to be very careful this weekend that I don't do more damage. Soft foods and all...and I'm not sure if I should use my mouth guard, which attachs to my 'uppers' and my broken tooth is one of those. Hmmm.

Not to create angst where hopefully there need be none @EdithEllenLily, but mine actually felt better after the break and sometimes they can just put on a crown, but, depending oh the configuration of the tooth and depth of the root, they will sometimes need to do the root canal, as they did with this one of mine... Not to worry. If you've never had one before, I can honestly tell you that while it was nerve wracking, it didn't hurt while he was doing it. It was unpleasant later, which is the gum and not the tooth, but that was alleviated in a few days with regular rinsing with warm salt water, and, of course, meds... Don't know about the mouth guard. I'd likely not use it and especially if it creates pressure on the tooth.

I think I will hold off on the mouth guard @stevieb...if I get a headache from clinching my teeth overnight, so be it! I'd rather have a headache than wreck my tooth even more. I have had two root canals (actually three, if you count two on one tooth from two different endodontists because the first one broke an old file down in my canal and the second one had to get it out using a huge microscope so he could see what he was doing -- and he got it OUT, thank goodness!). I'm hoping my dentist can just do a crown. Yikes all around, though! Woman Surprised

Perhaps we really are related @EdithEllenLily... I clench too and not just at night. Isn't it all just such a joy...

I find myself doing it during the day, too @stevieb! Too much stress and worry...heavy sigh...

I hear you @EdithEllenLily... Where would be without stress and worry... Gosh, I'd like to find out, wouldn't you...?

I'm usually worrying about my Mom, but now she's worrying about me and my tooth! When she saw the break, she said, "OH MY!" We were over at her place today to help her take down her Christmas decorations and all. She was doing better than me because I am stressed out about the uncertainties regarding this tooth. I hope to find out more tomorrow when the dentist is back in the office.

@EdithEllenLily... Yes, things like this are just another rut in the rode that we don't need. Look at it this way, best case scenario is a crown, worst, I hate to say, is an extraction. Somewhere there in the middle is the root canal and then a crown. I had one tooth that broke, I think they said, laterally, that had to be removed and replaced. In that case, none of the tooth was missing, but it broke all the way through length wise and couldn't be saved. The others (and yes, I've had several...) were mostly crowned and then then there was the one where the amount of tooth to break off and the proximity to the root required to crown it, required a root canal first, even though it didn't hurt... None of the above is a joyous experience, but at least you should know which way to go by this time tomorrow... Let's hope for a crown... Hey, I know we'd all prefer a tiara, but sometimes, only a crown suffices...

Thanks @handygal2 ... yes, I am the same as yesterday ... I'm eating soft foods and brushing and flossing after each meal ... I have no pain! I am SO HOPING the dentist can just do a crown to fix it up. I'm researching everything today ... teeth with silver fillings that break ... extractions ... bridges ... implants. I want to be prepared when the dentist tells me what he can or cannot do, and I always prepare for the worst in everything. Then if it's anything better, I'm pleasantly surprised. The weekend occurrence is a bummer for sure...Woman Sad

@Sister Golden Hair: lt was NWT, originally $398, with free shipping. I could have gotten it for about $170. Your Magic store is a treasure trove. The prices you pay are pre-inflationary prices from fifty years ago!

Re: Adventures of the Handbag Sisterhood... The Saga Continues

@stevieb @handygal2 @gramygram @Sister Golden Hair @NycVixen @skyblue @Serendipity @Boehm Collector and everyone:

On my way over to the dentist this morning, I was driving through big flakes of lake-effect snow on this cloudy day when all of a sudden the sun started streaming through the clouds with its rays coming down quite heavenly. Seeing that image, I had a feeling that this dental deal with my broken tooth would work out just fine. Sure enough, it did. My dentist said all I needed was a crown!!! I was so relieved. He did the crown prep this morning and I have the temporary on now. I'll get the permanent in two weeks. I'm super numb, even the left side of my nose is numb! The dentist said it’s common to break the bicuspid with a filling in it because when you bite on the food, the filling acts as a wedge so if there is too much pressure (on an old filling), it can push on the outside of the tooth and it breaks. He made me feel better and fixed me all up. Thanks, friends, for the well wishes this weekend when I was worrying!  Woman Very Happy
