@RedTop Oh, my goodness! Your story brings back memories! My dad paid us 10 cents for a quart mason jar full of Japanese beetles. But the biggest payoff was adding some gasoline to the jars and pouring the doused beetles on to the driveway and setting them on fire. I would NEVER let my grandkids do this today. I would probably be arrested!

I remember as a child the coffee cans being used to ignite Japanese beetles & gypsy moths.

@JustJazzmom Yes, also to the gypsy moths! Dad used to take a cloth covered, gasoline soaked stick and gather the moth nest on the stick and then ignite it. Beats a dead tree.

Eastern tent caterpillars have a silky nest, gypsy moths get picked off. Now, a fungus kills the gypsy moths.

That fungus has been found on oaks by us here. I remember when my youngest son was a year old (he’s 24 now) and I collected 2 junior sized baby food jars of gypsy moth caterpillars from a Japanese maple.
