It was OK with me.  I didn't want the baby gate sitting higher so cutting notches to fit around the bottom of the baby gate was the best option while installing those new boards.  It wasn't any sort of problem (still isn't) for me.  

Plus, I'd never have discovered fairy doors if there were no notches.

 

(I only use tension and/or free-standing gates now.  I don't think they made a wide enough tension gate 25 years ago.  Back then, I didn't ever think about changing anything or moving elsewhere.)
