Re: Clean up Continued, Day 2

I think the mermaid needs a blanket, maybe an electric one.  She looks cold.

@Kachina624, on the mermaid, I know, right?  She does need a blanket.  I think the stump is too high for her.  @KitTkat Has a good suggestion with a sedum or perhaps with a clematis.  Some of the sedum seed everywhere so I am a bit shy of that.  @KitTkat Did you have a particular one in mind?  LM

@Lilysmom

I like to just blend a variety of sedums together. I've never had a problem with them getting out of control. I like the clematis idea. When it'd be covered in blooms would be stunning.

Honeysuckle would be an idea too, since you have more than one stump. I love the smell as it grows here over a dead tree. Wind took part of it down a few years ago but it still is prolific.

@KitTkat It might be an expensive annual by where @Lilysmom lives. It’s too cold to survive where @Lilysmom lives.

Re: Clean up Continued, Day 2

@JustJazzmom@KitTkat, my MIL had a honeysuckle that really crowded her side porch.  The bush was gigantic (too large for the spot).  It also spread (planted by birds? Wind?) to other places in the yard.  It took me years to convince my BIL who inherited the house to get rid of it.  I never used that entry into the house because all manner of things hid in there.  For that reason, I'll opt out of honeysuckle.

I almost had the same experience with ivy.  Got it out before it got out of control. That stuff is invasive.  If I can get the clematis to grow, I think I will try that.  LM

Re: Clean up Continued, Day 2

HI Lilysmom,

I have 2 huge Japaneese maples and a couple years back one split during an ice storm.  I did lose one side of the tree in my front yard.  The branch that broke was almost 14" in diameter.  I was very concerned about the entire tree rotting and dying off.  I used a pruning spray and in the spring had an arborist come and cable the rest of the tree after giving it a good pruning, then had it fertilized internally (injected).

So far so good...It's still hanging in there.  I actually have a baby from that tree that is now about 15' tall and 4" in circumfrence that I hope does as well as my older tree.

Cant recommend cabling the trees enough.  I do think it saved this tree - especially with the harsh winter we've had here in New england. Best to you with yours!

Re: Clean up Continued, Day 2

@Jtdmum, thanks so much for sharing your story.  It gives me hope.  My tree sounds like yours, one side gone.

The two two trunks and root base have resettled since we uprighted them.  There were plants around the base of the tree so I will be interested in seeing if they survive the upheaval.

Counting the days until Spring.  LM
