Chainsaw activity today. All cut up in 4’ lengths for my neighbor to pick up. Got my heavy duty leaf blower out and got rid of the sawdust. Almost looks normal again.
Will post Maple damage and cut later. Phone died in the cold lol. LM
This photo is to get my brother going. DH is the chainsaw guy. I'm just posing for the camera. I have many talents but wielding a chainsaw is not one🙂!!! LM

@Lilysmom. ....and you thought you were going to spend the winter quilting. Ha!

So, here is the cut on the ragged edge of the Japanese maple. I notic d there are a couple of crossed branches that will be removed if the tree survives.
we are almost finished burning the last of the limbs. We made a well in the hole left by the roots and burned there. It went much quicker than I thought.. I wanted this done pronto as the Annapolis Valley has over a foot of snow which is headed our waY.
Just outside babysitting the fire now, yes, I would rather the quilting. There is a beautiful wood stove fire waiting for me inside.
@JustJazzmom, ant thoughts on the maple? LM

During the cleanup, I made sure DH left two 6-7’ stumps. Wasn't quite sure what I was going to do with the. Now I am thinking I should perch the mermaid on top of one. She would be overlooking the lake
I won’t be making this suggestion for awhile though....🙄! LM

I would have cut the branch right below the split. It’s fine where you made the cut. How did the tree get split at the trunk? Were there high winds or ice on the branches?

@JustJazzmom, the tree got hit by a 50’ Spruce which fell in our Christmas Day storm.
I am not sure I understand where you would cut it? I think you mean just below the jagged edge? I came too close to the ‘V’? Let me know for next time. LM
PS, one of my neighbors suggest d sealing it with hot wax???

No sealing. The wound will compartimentalize on its own. Close to the V is fine too. It’s near the branch bark collar where the cut was made.

Decorating with stumps can be fun. I've always envisioned cutting a hole in a stump and filling it with sedums or a trailing perennial.
