We never know what others are facing. Kindness and understanding matter more than the latest fashion. And I love fashion.

People who put no effort into their appearance are not always old! The point is that there are just as many young sloppy looking people as old - always has been and always will be.
Totally agree, thus the frumpy and dumpy adjectives!!
You have totally missed the point.
Not a hard point to get. You think frumpy and dumpy cannot be used for a 30 year old??

IMO, you can't object to the words frumpy and matronly if you turn around and call other clothes or those wearing them by nasty names.
Some of these terms were used yesterday when talking about an outfit a host was wearing. She has an incredible body and she had the audacity to show it off. Some of the comments were quite mean.
well said......i hate when those terms are used also. women putting other women and their choices down is alive and well right here on the fashion forums. it will NEVER go away.

I'm proud to be a little old lady and I enjoy dressing and finally looking good in black, black was not my color as a young woman. I don't care what people on these boards think of how older people look or dress or what words they use to describe it. All the talk on these boards are opinions and like belly buttons every one has one.

I don't necessitate frumpy and dumpy with age but with a look..there can be people who dress frumpy and dumpy at 25 ..lol..

All of us know lively, fashionable ladies of mature years........but we probably also know that as we get older and our bodies and lifestyles change with time, many women dress more modestly and conservatively, cover more skin, and are less likely to wear trendy, of-the-moment fashions. Longer skirts, longer sleeves, higher necklines, less body-conscious fit.......all of it can come across as frumpy and dumpy to the young and adventurous, I guess! But many of us (for good reason) are not eager to show off thighs, knees, upper arms, necks, decolletage, muffin tops, backfat and all the rest. Not to mention that some of us can no longer walk in high heels or trendy platform shoes! I don't think the "old lady" adjectives have much to do with sloppiness or bad taste; it's probably more about being more conservative and less adventurous in clothing choices.
But we can still look GOOD.

For some reason I have always believed the words above described English women more than American women and with a wide age span. A 35 year old woman can appear frumpy and a 70 year old woman can certainly look stylish and sophisticated.

"Old ladies" are the last group in the country that it's not politically incorrect to offend???
BTW at 69 years, I'm guessing I'd be considered an old lady by anyone's accounting. Not that I feel like (or look like) an old lady most days!
