What to give for a bridal shower gift

I have been invited to the bridal shower of a good friends' daughter. I have browsed the on-line registry and just can't find anything that really excites me. Household items leave me a bit bored and was thinking of a gift of a more personal nature. I was shopping this past week at a high end department store and found this really beautiful crystal evening bag that I thought was spectacular (and unique). After getting it home, I debated with myself as to whether this is an appropriate shower gift. Would a bride use something like that at the reception for lip gloss etc? Obviously it could be used over again. Any opinions? Returning it is an option.

I think a clock would be a nice gift, a mantel clock or one of those beautiful rhythm clocks.

I think a bridal gift should be more for the couple and not just for the bride.

She may never have any use for that bag....take it back....

Brides have a registry for a reason....it is items that they want and need...why would you want to divert to something else...

Same goes for the clock idea...maybe she wouldn't want that type clock or have no place to sit or hang it...another waste of money....

You may not like what is on her list....but its her list...

I liken this to when someone asks me for gift ideas....and then they buy me some item I have no use for...now I am stuck with it...and have to be pleasant and say thank you...ugh...

I wouldn't purchase the bag or a clock.

If you don't want to get something from her registry, give her a gift card or cash.

I agree a thousand percent with this! Give a gift card to the store where they are registered and it will be very appreciated and useful for them!

If you don't want to purchase a gift from the registry, everyone can use a lovely picture frame, Lenox, Waterford or another crystal, etc.

While an evening bag might be lovely for some, I'm doubtful that I'd ever give that as a shower gift. If you want to give her something more personal, I've been to showers where the bride received lingerie.

For a special bride-to-be, I usually give a piece of my own personal crystal or Belleek along with a gift card to the store where she's registered.
