Yes she has become quite the actress.  I actually graduated from high school from that town and knew one of her brothers.  She is 5 years younger than me so I don't remember her that well.  I also don't recall them being as poor and struggling as much as her stories say.  The brother I knew was always dressed in clean clothing, and seemed like just antoher kid in school. (I recall him being quite funny)  I'm not saying there isn't truth to her history but IMO, it's a little dramatized.   Happy for her success.

@LindaSal I think I'll believe Viola's version of HER life over that of a complete stranger🙄

I have never heard or had the impression that Viola ever misrepresented or exaggerated any aspect of her early life.

@Love to Run Excuse me but I don't get why you feel you have to get on my case when again, I am just stating an opinion.  I am not a complete stranger, I knew the family as Central Falls is a very small town and eveyone knew everyone.......I stated I didn't recall them being poor and struggling that's all.  Jeez.  Also some of my friends I went to school with feel the same way.   Did you grow up in the same area??  Doubt it.

@LindaSal No, I did not grow up in the area. But if I did, I wouldn't presume to know the societal pressures, family dynamics, or finanaces of someone I've never met and whose family I've only seen in school.

I would never judge either, having clean clothes doesn't mean you're not poor. In fact most people living in poverty probably try their best to hide that because they don't want to be judged and ridiculed and don't want their children to be. Especially when they're also dealing with racism, as Viola talks about in her book.

I don't understand the need to interject such an"opinion" in a thread about her dress at Cannes, but that's just me I guess. Not every opinion has to be shared, some are tactfully  better left unsaid. Especially when suggesting that someone is lying about their life when you have no personal inside knowledge.

Sorry I didn't realize we were not allowed to "interject" an opinion on here.  I did say that I was happy for her success and she's a great actress.  I didn't say that she was making up her history and yes there may be some truth to it.  But in my legitimate experience growing up and knowing members of the family,  it's just how I remember it, that's all.

Helen's face looks different.  Maybe it's just her expression.

@LindaSal   I don't think you said anything wrong.  You just stated your opinion which, like the rest of us, you are entitled to.  Maybe you and Viola just remember things differently.  At any rate, there was nothing nasty about your remarks and you shouldn't be made to feel badly about what you said.

And, as far as not sticking to the topic of the dress, people go off topic all the time on these boards.  That's what "discussion" is all about.
