@ALRATIBA I agree. fabric softener is some pretty bad stuff too. My DH buys dryer sheets once in a while and I throw them out when he Isn't watching. He likes them for static control.
I use wool dryer balls instead.

Don't have water in the iron and my tops I just put in dryer on no heat cycle do have fabric softener sheets in there maybe that's what's causing those spots that just materialize out of nowhere when you lay your iron down on the top.
I think it's something in the clothes they're making now days.

@SharkE The theories others have mentioned sound plausible to me. My days of ironing are well behind me.
When I did iron things the kind of mystery spot you mention did happen to me once in a while. I was good at pressing collars and cuffs--used to do my Dad's dress shirts for work and my uniform blouses for high school.
Now I avoid the whole ordeal of pressing things off by using a hand held steamer. For me it is easier and much faster and with far better results.
I am a klutz at folding clothes, too. If I took a retail job at the Gap I wouldn't last a half hour--they would show me the nearest exit post haste!
Special dressy shirts and other items are taken to the dry cleaners or I use the P & G Dryel system in my dryer.
I don't mind hand washing so I do that for lingere, hosiery, and delicate blouses.

I remember ironing when I had a busted ankle those clothes had to be ironed I'd sit down and iron when I couldn't stand much longer.
I powered thru lots of bad times. Stuff don't get done by itself and I'm IT LOL

I iron my blouses all the time. I don't like looking unkept. I use spray starch to make them look crisper. As long as I purchase blouses, I will continue to iron. It doesn't take that long to do. I hang my blouses to dry.

Your water reservoir has build up. You need to clean it and only use distilled water. When the iron gets hot it comes out with the steam and puts the spots on your clothing you are ironing.

@ECBG Isn't Dawn just a wonder--it works for helping solve so many "household" problems, plus can be used to make a "blowing bubbles" concoction for the kids!
I buy the largest refill size I can find because if I run out of it I inevitably need it. I use it for hand washing dishes but for many other things, too.

@aroc3435 Absolutely! Let's not forget all the wildlife that was saved because of oil slicks.
The discussion here was about grease on clothes, so I confined my answer to that.![]()
