I've noticed that more of the clothing l order, which used to be made in China, is now manufactured in India. This is especially true for Lucky Brand tops, which l've been buying for many years. I have several recently-purchased sweatshirts, and summer tees and tops that are now imported from India.

I find that the materials and workmanship are superior to when they were crafted in China. I'm also seeing a few labels indicating Vietnam or the Philippines as the source of manufacture.

Have any of you noticed this, and have other brands also made this transition? Plenty of time to look through our closets and investigate!

Re: Made in India

[ Edited ]

T-Shirts I bought in the fall from both Land's End and LL Bean were made in Cambodia.

And I just looked in my closet at a few more and see a couple from Land's End were made in Viet Nam. And one from LL Bean was made in Peru.

@handygal2  Also not being political, but I think the recent tariffs motivated many manufacturers to relocate their factories out of China.  I know of a couple manufacturers (not for clothing, but small electronics items) that moved out of China to Taiwan and Bangladesh.

Definitely noticed it -- years ago.

I've always tried to stay away from anything "made in china" because it was apparent that garments made elsewhere (i.e., India, Haiti, Domincan Republic, Phillipines, Vietnam), fit better.  Coats "made in china" were always the worst;  ill-fitting; and the shoulders were always too narrow and the sleeves were too short.  Cheap, cheap cheap!

Also, it's sad to see all the peeps who'd written bad reviews on AMZN re: clothes "made in china".  Therein lies the problem.  IMHO, that's over.  And we'll all have better fitting clothes in the future because of it.

Both China's growing economy and the tariffs contributed. Companies will go where they can get the cheapest labor and as China's economy grew, it became cheaper to go elsewhere.

Planet Money did a fantastic 5-part story about clothing manufacturing back in 2013. You can find it online under the title Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt. They started with the sourcing and picking of the cotton and followed the production of the shirt through the sewing, the shipping, and getting the product to the consumer. I highly recommend it. They funded the project by selling the shirts on Kickstarter. and then backers got to follow the story and watch the shirts get made. It was pretty cool and I still have my shirt.

Items we are buying today Im sure were ordered by the manufacturers many months ago before there was even a thought of the virus.  So, I dont think there is a trend now.  Perhaps by next spring.

Bean's Pima cotton tees have been made in Peru for several years.

I definitely have global closet.

Wonder what I'd learn if I removed everything and then put things back organized by country of origin?   No, I'm not going to do that -  it's just one of the the weird thoughts flitting through my underused brain.

I did take a look at the tops I bought in February when I'd been shopping for a trip that would have started next week ---  4 imported, 3 USA made.  One Mexico, one India, 2 Vietnam.  I know if I'd sort through older purchases, I'd find Turkey, Pakistan, Italy, France, Spain, Russia, and China, too.

A trip around the world --   all within a few hundred steps of where I'm sitting.

I snip tags so fast I will never know where a lot of things come from.
