She dresses so very conservatively (unless she's wearing skirts that are quite - and sometimes too- short IMO.  That's a nice, staid outfit.  IMO, with her hairdo, it ages her.  I think this is a good example of when she plays it too safe. There is plenty of time for her to dress that conservatively when she's in her late 50s and early 60s; she should be just a bit more adventurous and age-appropriate IMO than this outfit.  It's nice enough, just kind of "blah" and agining to her IMO.

I understand where you are coming from on this, but she is dressing here for a role, that of a future Princess of Wales and Queen.  These occasions are full of protocol .

when she is off duty she dresses like most 30ish mothers

I also think that once Charles become King some of the rules for all these things will relax,

However she looks loveley

The Duchess looks beautiful, as usual!  Love the coat.  Fits her perfectly.  I think she is dressed appropriately for the event.

You know, when my 11 yr. old granddaughter asked me what I wanted for Christmas last year, I told her I would have to think about it.  I tried to think of something inexpensive that she might have fun picking out with her mom (my DD).  Then one morning while putting on my winter coat I thought it would be nice to have a pretty pin on my lapel, so that's what I asked for.

They picked out a classic, round pin with little pearls on it, very simple and pretty.  My granddaughter was so proud to give it to me!  Of course I gushed over her selection and told her it was just perfect!  I really do like it, too!

But I'll tell you, everywhere I went wearing that pin, someone always said "What a nice pin!  Where did you get it?".  😀  Every time I wear a pin on my coat, every time, I get lovely compliments.  It's so fascinating to me that total strangers do that about a pin.  Most of them have been women, but a few men, too.

Didn't mean to highjack the OP, but Kate's pretty pin made me think of mine!  🙂

@LdyBugz.  I like to wear Southwestern-themed pins in sterling on my jean jackets.  Have also put them on my straw summer hats.

@LdyBugz the Queen wears pins all the time - i think she broadcasts a message with each one. she seems to have sentimental attachments to many of them.  i have always worn pins when i dress up - picked it up from my mother.  they can elevate a simple outfit. i'm not really that much into necklaces / pendants

Lovely, as ususal.

I have some earrings almost identical to those, but I do not wear them often.

They are omega backs, and more than once, when someone has hugged me, the posts on the earring have dug into my neck.   I think some of my huggers might have been too enthusiastic Cat Very Happy

Seems I bought them from QVC....possibly Honora many years back.  I have them in white and black.

They always look right!

Re: Duchess of Cambridge Greets Troops at Beating Retreat Military Pageant

Most of the pictures we see of Duchess Kate are her working wardrobe.  She is, always, beautifully dressed whether it be her outfit or her hair.  Her clothes are impeccably tailored and she, always, presents herself beautifully.  Her look is classic and timeless and suits her as well as the position she holds.  As the future Queen Consort, it is not necessary for her to be "fashion" forward in her role.  I love how she presents herself, an easygoing charm, totally engaged, always a show of enjoyment.  She displays a calm, warm, elegance in all that she undertakes.

I have no doubt that her personal wardrobe is very different as it should be.

She is a lovely, young woman and represents her position in the Royal family with elegance and grace.

I'm sure her outfit is appropriate for the event, but it ages her.  Particularly the jewelry.

That being said, she looks perfect.

I want those shoes.  I love that Kate dresses as a "future" Queen regardless of whether she is in her late 30's, 40's ect.......  I think she does this as a tremendous amount of respect for her Grandmother-in-law.  Not to mention she is raising a King.

She always looks amazing, whether in a gown or jeans. She dresses for the role of her day whether she is playing the mommy role spending time with her children or attending an event requiring formal attire.
