Mimi G made her denim trench coat using Simplicity #9389 and 10oz denim blue

Changes she made

"added a pleat to the back vent, made the collar wider by 1/2", and I also squared off and lengthened the storm flap. I made the epaulettes wider too. The ties at the sleeves were great as is but I wanted them long and to wrap around my wrist so I made them a bit wider and longer."

Looks like they were out of her size.

Sure could use a little good news today.

Constructing a coat is not for the amateur...    There is a LOT of detail work on this trench...

It looks like she did a fabulous job. That trench has a lot of detail to it and construction looks perfect.

I have never tried making a coat. Pants, skirts and simple dresses are all I attempted. I enjoyed making clothes when there was quality fabric available. Hard to find quality fabric for clothes where I can touch and feel the fabric.

@Desertdi  Not for the unskilled was my first reaction, too.   My second was that the pattern designers knew what they were doing.  The fabric and the workmanship look fine, but I don't like the any of oversized effects of her changes.

Although the shoulder is slightly large, if the denim doesn't stretch, you would need room for movement.  The sleeve is about right-to to the top of the thumb so the sleeve doesn't pull up.

Mimi's husband, Norris, made this double breasted jacket.

The oversized changes she made to the pattern result in the coat overwhelming her frame.  I don't care for the pleat in the back at all.  Her husbands coat, in contrast, fits his frame and is very attractive on him.

Horrible fit. Big, baggy, sleeves toooooo long. A sloppy look.

I must be missing something.  What's this all about?
