@2penny: You can ask whoever does your eye check to give you your d/c measurement. Also Zenni gives you directions for doing it yourself (very easy).

The last time I got glasses (last year) I already had my glasses picked out. They are a striking pair of Kate Spade glasses and a pair of Kate Spade sunglasses. I've never gotten so many compliments on wearing glasses! This is the first time it didn't go nuts trying to find glasses. Pick them out first then go for your exam!

Thanks for all the good advice.
I didn't have time to play around with the online sites, but I arrived early and had time to try on almost every pair of glasses in the shop before my eye exam. They're very different from the "girlier" ones I have now.
I am limited because my progressive RX requires a large frame. The prices always stun me, though.
This was the breakdown AFTER my insurance was taken into account:
$25 eye exam
$75 contact lens exam (RX has not changed)
$140 two/12 packs of contact lenses
$60 frames
$160 eyeglass lenses
$76 transitions lenses
-----
$535 out of pocket
If I had not had insurance, the total would have been
$1,015 without the contact lenses. I don't know how people can afford that.

My Rx is for trifocals so I have to have the lens area be a certain minimal size.I guess I'm just used to wearing bigger glasses because small glasses look funny to me .

Your eyes should be in the center of the frame, you should be able to see your eyebrows and make sure they are not touching your cheeks. You will get a mark there and we don't need anymore lines then we already have.

@house_cat .... I agree, prices are through the roof! I've been getting my exams at America's Best. $99 for three years of exams. Then, I order my contacts and glasses from Costco. They are limited in styles, especially in my size, but their prices are great, but I found some I liked.
I don't remember what I paid for my contacts. I think it was $80 for a 6 month supply. That's less than I found them for anywhere else.
Frames were $59 or $69, while the lenses, which are high index, progressive, transitions, were $200. I don't have insurance.

On me, the rimless ones make me look 10 years older. Even though I have blond hair, I need somewhat darker tortoise frames, and more rectangular. I have worn Coach or Kate Spade frames for many years because I have a small face and these fit better. Sometimes they are about the only ones that do fit out of the many I try on.

They need to be sturdy, reasonably priced and small enough for my fit over sunglasses from QVC. Looks are in the eye of the beholder so I narrow it down to five frames and have DH help with the final choice.
