I watched "The Fabulous Baker Boys" two nights ago.  (LOVE that movie.)

Michelle Pfeiffer's clothing was all mid-1980s.

One scene in the movie, the guys are looking for a dress for her to wear, Beau's character turns to her and asks "size 8, right?"  She nods yes.

Michelle Pfeiffer was a tiny, skinny as a rail woman.  By today's sizing, she would be a "0" and it would probably be too big for her.

All by myself, I laughed out loud!!

Sizing has sure changed. And Michelle... have you ever heard of the Breatharians ? Look it up when you get a chance. She was a part of it. A bunch of nuts whose belief that was you don't need food - just air. An excuse for anorexia. The leader was caught chowing down at a McDonalds, and that was the end of the cult.

Re: 1987 Sizing

[ Edited ]

Michelle Pfeiffer wasn't even an 8 by 1980s standards. I was a 6 then and she has always been thinner than I was.

That size was in the script and doesn't mean that's what she actually wore.

Yes, sizes have changed, but not that much since 198.

Re: 1987 Sizing

Our current vanity sizing is crazy. My teenage size 10 in the 60s would now be a size zero. When we hear that Marilyn Monrioe was a size 12, we need to remember that her size was small. Americans are getting heavier and manufacturers deceive with sizes that are a far cry from what they were a generation ago.

@Vivian

I was discussing that with a friend the other day.  She said she weighs 40 pounds more than she did when she was 20 but she still wears a size 12.  That is really ridiculous.

@LilacTree

All I know is that I ALWAYS felt fat. Even at a size 5, I felt fat.

I remember twice in my life when I felt GOOD about my body image.

That is kinda sad.

Told my niece that she shouldn't feel fat when she was 10. I told her that I was fat as a child. She wanted to see. Got the picture out... I wasn't!  I was floored and don't have any idea about why I thought this about myself?

I am about 20 lbs. heavier now than I was in the 80's, and...wear a smaller size now. How's that for nutso? lol

OK, so I weight about 20 pounds more than I did when I was in high school and back then, I wore a size "12". I was a rail thin thing at 5'11" and certainly no size 12. I'm an 8 now, so I was actually probably a 4 back "in the day". I don't remember seeing sizes 0-4 back then and I'm talking 40 years ago.

Remember the "5-7-9" stores.  Those were the small sizes.

I remember it being said that Marilyn Monroe was a size 14!
