would appreciate help with iMac document stacker

I'm a pretty new Mac user. I work from home and love the document stacker, which stays down on the dock.

Since yesterday, when I open a file from the internet, from my office, instead of the file going down to the dock and creating a document stack, it's sending the file instead up to the top of the Safari screen- to the right of the address bar- the small down arrow that's in a little grey circle contained in a square.

I don't like looking for my downloads there but have no idea what happened to the document stacker on my dock or how to get it back.

Can anyone help?
