@Mom2Dogs wrote:Thanks everyone for the replies. I am more interested in why the internet is set up the way it is than my friend. Curretly she is under a LOT of stress and I am helping her purge her home for a possible move.
Quizzing her about the internet connection would not go well, LOL.
Next time I am at her house I will suggest she pitch the desktop and go wireless - if it will cost her more money, she will not be interested right now...with what is going on in her life, dealing with her internet is not a priority.
again, thanks
It's very simple! The reason it's set up that way is so the desktop can access the internet. Depending on the age of the desktop, it can only connect using an ethernet cable and is not wireless. Unplug the desktop and get rid of it if it doesn't work. She must have a wireless router if she is getting online with other devices. The exception is, if she is using a cellular connection. You really are making this harder than it has to be.

@gadgetgal613 IF I understood about the connection, I would never have asked the question.

Since she has so much going on in her life, and the internet is not a priority! Wait till she has "little going on", and discuss her internet with her.
I could type several suggestions, some of which have already been offered, but! Since it is not a priority for her, I am wondering why it seems to be to you.
With today's technology, accessing the internet is pretty easy. Got a smart phone it has wifi access. Go to most any public place and access it there for free.
Since the internet is not a priority, and the computer is dead, toss it. When her life slows down, she can start from scratch, depending on her need of a computer, or just a smart wireless device.

@hckynutjohn ...because she is relying on me to help her purge her house and the computer and printer that don't work would be nice to get rid of...that is why I asked the question about how things are hooked up.
She may get 30 days if she has to relocate and I also work and have a life - so moving at my speed is a priority.

I explained it in my other post. It's set up that way so the desktop computer can connect to the internet. Get rid of the desktop if its not working. She shouldn't have any problems with connecting her additional devices.

Guess I missed the part of her having to move out, and doing so in 30 days. I thought she was just getting rid of junk in her house when you said "purge or purged".
To me if she may be moving, or whatever her circumstances, the computer is junk, and I don't get why how that was/is hooked up makes a difference. As I said, start from scratch, when she gets new equipment.
I've helped many friends move, and I have also set up their audio or audio/video system, after they relocated. How they were hooked up from where they were moving?
Had nothing to do with how I set them up after they moved. That was using some of their present equipment, or new. If they had equipment that didn't work, I wouldn't help them move it, that is all on them. Same with setting it up in their relocation. If they had a dud? Call me when you have equipment that works.
And yes, I was also working/running my hockey league/Ref in youth hockey games/running road races etc etc. And taking care of my domestic needs/washing clothes/cleaning apartment/making my lunches, and let's see! Having a life.
My friend's priority or mine? Hmmm! Mine.
