"Windows Defender, formerly known as Microsoft AntiSpyware, is a software product that helps combat malware. Windows Defender was initially an antispyware program; it is included with Windows Vista and Windows 7 and is available as a free download for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. In Windows 8, however, it is upgraded to an antivirus program.

Re: Your opinions on keeping your computer safe

Man, I'll tell you one thing - Some computer guy talked my husband into installing the AVG Security Suite (paid) program on his laptop. Now, right up front - I'm not a fan of 'suites' to begin with. But this is the most awful resource hog I think I've ever seen.

I have him leave me his laptop to clean it up and make sure everything is up to date, about once a month, and every time I get it this guy has installed some qrap on it. It's slower than molasses in January because of this bloaty thing.

I have nothing against AVG antivirus - it's not my choice, but it's fine. But this security suite is garbage. It has more arms than a pack of octopi (is that right?).

So, moral of the story is that I would not recommend that piece of software. I wish my husband (who knows pretty much nothing about computers) would stop following this guy's advice.

I agree with you. I'm not a big fan of the security suites. McAfee once locked me out of being able to go online until I went online to verify my ownership of the software after they updated the software. They couldn't understand why I considered this a problem and kept advising me that all I had to do was go online and verify my ownership. "But, I can't go online as your software won't let me." "That's because you haven't gone online and verified that you're the owner. As soon as you do it'll be fine." "But, I can't go online." "No, because you haven't gone online to verify ownership yet." I finally just gave up and deleted all of their software from my computer.
