Hi Jordan2,

Save your money for a new computer.

I use CCleaner, http://www.piriform.com/blog/2013/4/25/ccleaner-v401 I do not use registry tools.

Disk Defrag http://www.filehippo.com/download_auslogics_disk_defrag/

and System Ninja https://singularlabs.com/software/system-ninja/

Hi, Jordan ... I agree with Nutmeg and use CCleaner ... the free version (also don't check the registry tools).

My Sony desktop automatically defrags on a timed regular basis, and although I have Auslogics installed on my computer, I've rarely had to use it.

Nutmeg and I save lots of money by not buying into these gadgets "as shown on TV."

On CCleaner, how come you don't check the registry tools? I use CCleaner, just checked, and it looks like the registry section is all checked.

I'm not tech-savvy enough and can get into deep trouble by deleting something in the registry with which I'm not all that familiar. I go to two sites for this kind of advice ... Comcast Help Forums and DSLReports.

Hi Jordon,

These programs are from secure sites.

I do not touch the registry. If you remove the wrong item(s), your computer could not open or close.

Thank you nutmeg3 for explaining the registry situation. CCleaner apparently comes with the registry section all checked, and I've run it several times on two laptops with no problems...guess I was lucky!

I also have another question...I consider myself to be decently computer savvy. However, I CANNOT get links to post correctly on my forum responses. I am using the link icon at the top and copy and paste the link in the correct window, but when I click insert, all the fields go blank. You seem to have no trouble posting links. What am I doing wrong? BTW...I am using Firefox on either of two laptops...one a W7 and one a W8.1.

I love this forum. I came on last night to ask about this win-cleaner thing as hubby had mentioned it and I said I'd consult with the techies on the Q board. Started reading this thread and came upon Caffeina's post followed the suggestions in the linked article on speeding up my pc and today it's working so much faster than it was yesterday.

I did a scan for malware and I think that was the problem as it removed 1100 items -- guess I will periodically run the malware program and hopefully not have to deal with a slow pc ever again!!

Thank you to all of you who are willing to help those of us who are less tech savvy!!

Thanks again nutmeg3 for the links. I just downloaded the CCleaner and ran it. I'll see next time if my computer is any faster when I start it up. Do I really need to do the other 2 things that you suggested? I'm always so afraid I'm going to do something terribly wrong to my computer! Thanks again!

Yes you do. Your computer needs a good defrag, and System Ninja will remove a lot of old buried files.
