The Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 or the newest Apple ipad?
I am an avid reader and read in bed every night so I'm also concerned about comfort. I do use the kindle I have now for other things. The web, words with friends, etc.
Your opinions will be greatly appreciated.

I think it really depends on your needs and how you intend to use it.
Is there a reason you want/need to replace the Kindle you have? What is it that makes you want a new one? Which Kindle version do you have now?
For what you've described, (reading, web, games) either one works well. If you want to know about comfort, I would go to the Apple Store and get your hands on the new iPad to compare. There are reasons to choose one over another, but your needs are pretty generic and you haven't indicated anything that would make me recommend the functionality of one over another, so I would recommend the more affordable option.

I like kindle Paperwhite for just reading books. For tablets I prefer ipad.

I, too, am an avid reader and have used my Kindle Keyboard every day in the last two years and I would never give it up.
I also just got the Kindle Fire HDX 7" and find it uncomfortable to use as a reader because it is heavier than the Keyboard.

I would go to an Apple or wireless store to take a test drive. Cnet has some great video reviews.

All great advice on this thread.
I've been so happy with my iPad. I always try to encourage people to think about what they want the device to do for them and what they're willing to spend, ask trusted family and friends what they use and why they like their choices, read online comparisons and reviews (like the great ones nutmeg3 shared), go to a store and get the look and feel of the products. One other thing: Most people discover there's even more they wanted (but didn't know they wanted
) from a device once they purchase it and see how much it can do for them. So you'll likely get a bonus of unexpected uses, no matter what you decide to buy.

If you're just mainly reading on it in bed, think about size and holding it while in bed. If you're just going to use it mainly to read, then you might want a smaller, lighter ereader. The 8.9 HDX and the iPad are large. Do you have any problems reading on an LED screen or would one of the front-lit e-ink screens be preferable for you?
