I bought a new desktop computer running Windows 10. I also need a new router. I haven't bought one in a good number of years now and they seem to be more expensive than I remember, maybe the ones I've seen are higher end. What should I be looking for? Are the more expensive ones a necessity or would a lower priced one be fine? Do you have a favorite brand?

I've been using a D-Link for a several years ... never had a problem. '
Guy at Staples recommended it.
ETA .... check with your cable provider ... you may be able to get a router from them for a small monthly fee.

Find out which router is supported by your internet provider. They have a list and will tell you which one is best for your needs. I have Comcast, and they have a big list. I also went to CNET website and read their reviews.

Yes, definitely check with your isp first. I have CenturyLink and I bought the Zytel router for $30 LESS than what CL wanted for the same one. They were willing to rent me one for a fee of $10 per month which I did for the first few months. After that I just bought my own and returned the rental to CL.
Another thing I can suggest is to speak with your isp customer service and they may suggest one particular type of router that will suit your needs. Some people have more devices which can be more demanding on the wifi. So I think discussing your needs is an important part of deciding which one to buy.

I agree call your cable company and ask about wireless routers. I Ike a site, smallnet builders. I have a Netgear R7000.

About two years ago our internet provider requested that we update our router. At that time they sent us a letter telling us what it needed to be.

I like Linksys and have owned several over the years. I've never had to check with my internet provider (Comcaast) to find a compatible router. I did check with them for a list of compatible modems which is a must. If you plan on buying a combination router/modem, then definitely check the list.
Here is a helpful hint I've used twice. Once you get the router setup, get into the settings and change the name and security password to the ones used by your old router. By doing this, you won't have to reconnect all of your devices.

We've used the Apple "Extreme" Base Stations for years. Works great. We rent our ISP (Comcast/XFINITY) modem from them and we've hooked up our router with no problem.

You could buy a new modem every year for what you pay Comcast to rent one.

You're right. I just started renting because I was new at the game, thought that modems were "repair-intensive", and wanted Comcast to be responsible for any problems. I found out that they were almost problem-free and have just continued renting.
You've coaxed me into thinking about buying.
THANK YOU!!!!
