You've coaxed me into thinking about buying.
THANK YOU!!!!
In all of the years I've had cable internet service, I've never had a modem or router "go bad". I've had them get too old for the latest updates and bought new. If you rent for $10 a month, that's $120 a year which really adds up. Please do yourself a favor and buy your own equipment. You will need to call your internet provider and report a change in your modem (not your router) so it is registered to your account. This is one way Comcast (and I'm sure other companies) prevent theft. Sit back and enjoy an extra $120 a year in your bank account.

I bought my own modem from the beginning. I give Comcast enough money each month without volunteering to give more. The last time I updated my modem I was able to get it entered in to their system online. Just be sure you purchase a modem that is compatible with their system and includes VOIP if your phone service is also through them. No need to talk to them at all!!!

You'll need a way to get online to register it. It won't connect until it's registered and entered into your account.

When I need to upgrade my cable modem I go to DSL REPORTS. Com. The site has a Comcast forum. The network people talk about products every day.

@glb613 Not true. When you first attempt to connect to a website, you should automatically get a registration screen. Complete instructions are here: http://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Your-Home-Network/Install-amp-Activate-Your-Purchased-Modem-for-Comcast...
I would get your internet up and running between the modem and the computer first, then connect your router in between. That will make any needed troubleshooting easier. It's been a couple of years since I updated my modem, I remember it being very simple, far simpler than doing it over the phone several years earlier.

It's never worked that way for me. If I get another new modem, I'll see if an activation page appears when I plug it in.
