There Has To Be An Easier Way

Setting up the WiFi is such a hassle. Too many id numbers, too many passwords, etc. Where to find all this information? Egads. I'm not having much fun with my new toy.....

If you choose the ID numbers and passwords yourself, it's easy to remember. If you can't do that, keep good records.

In my last apartment, I set up my own. When I moved, I asked the cable guy to use the exact same information. My parents didn't give their cable guy a password option when he set theirs up and so they have a 12 character password that's made up of numbers and letters in both upper and lower case and it's very difficult to enter. Whatever you do, keep a record of it somewhere. My mom may have the craziest password I've ever seen, but she always knows where to find her documentation and hands it to me when I visit with a new device and need to enter it.

While most new technology is great, I don't recall or have heard anyone say it is going to be easy for everyone to participate in using it. I've found from my learning experiences over decades that the best thing for me is to write everything down, even if at the time they seem to be very minute'. That way should something come up in the future I can refer to my notes. I would have been completely lost at times during these decades had I not decided to write everything down.

While at times I enjoy setting up home theaters for people, I can't say it is fun for me to try to explain to them how to use everything. Most of the time I do the setting up and tell them to read all the manuals and call me if they have a problem that is not related to them not reading the manual or unable to understand something within it.

I am not expert when it comes to setting up Wi-fi, but in comparison to some other electronic issues I've seen over time, it was far from being the most difficult of them.

Should you run out of known options, ask specific questions and I am sure someone here will be able to help you complete this task.

You may want to look at some YouTube videos. I found my last wireless router, a Netgear very easy to install. There was not any numbers etc. The router did all the work. It even came with a passcode. It took about 15 minutes.

Don't want to sound like a paid commercial, but I was able to set up our Apple equipment myself, and I consider myself a total dunce when it comes to technology.

I figured out a very secure password for myself - has capitals and some symbols and numbers and I use it for almost everything. You need it to be >8 digits for some sites so be sure to do that. I also keep a book where I write down all my passwords in case I would forget one that is not the one I use all the time. For instance, my bank site I have a different one.

If you have wi-fi set up in your home already, it's just a matter of entering the password your provider gave you when it was set up, for each device you add. If you have just purchased a router, modem, combination of the two and are starting from scratch with your wifi so to speak, doing it yourself - call your service provider and tell them what numbers and passwords you are being asked for - write them down, and keep them handy. They get calls like that all the time. I have U-Verse and my password is on a sticker on the side of the modem/gateway. But before that, millennia ago when I knew a lot less about wifi, ATT had installed my modem and I was clueless as to what my numbers or password were. I had to pay people to work on it, and learned my lesson. Once you have the numbers you need, keep 'em handy!
